Full of potential - none of it realisedOn the face of it, this place should have a lot going for it - ancient building with lots of courtyards, historic furniture but with modern plumbing and electrics. In fact, when the walls were painted, much of it dripped on to the old woodwork, where it was left. The plaster was peeling from the walls and that on the outside was black with mold. The paving stones in the courtyards were badly spaced and uneven and all the courtyards were choked with weeds. The carpet was filthy and hadn't even been swept around the beds. The only good thing to be said about the carpets was that they probably made the floor a little softer than the beds!!! The room was also very dark and neither the fridge nor the safe worked. Breakfast was served in another building across the street, the entrance to which took some finding. It had to be ordered the night before and consisted of bacon or meatballs, fried egg or plain omelette and hash browns. This was served with coffee or tea and a request for a second cup of coffee was greeted with amazement, though finally satisfied.

Great experience in traditional Chinese houseWe went for the second time to this very charming hotel in the pedestrian area of PingJiang Lu. From there you can easily walk and enjoy the historical area. The rooms are very comfortable and spacey, we had a wooden bath tube and the room was very quiet and romantic. Some of the public areas would require some renovation (carpet in the stair and corridor) but In general the hotel with its courtyards and small garden is very nice and offers a unique experience. We love this place and will come back again. Different comment on the breakfast which is in a nearby external building: this is really in need of a deep cleaning as the carpet has thousands of dark greasy spots, the table cloths are torn in most sides... and little choice for the food (it would be much better if they would have a kind of Chinese and international buffet and a cook to prepare for example eggs and noodles in front of you like in other places of this nice hotel chain), so book the hotel but have breakfast somewhere else!

Utterly charmingThis historic lodge is seriously charming if a little dilapidated. It is right in the centre of a lovely district. If you come in winter be sure to bring warm pyjamas and clothes. Breakfast somewhat meh.

Comfy accommodation in an ancient Chinese houseSecond time I 've been here and found that the place is starting to look a bit shabby. However, rooms are lovely with Chinese-style furniture & clean on-suite bathroom. It's great for atmosphere and is ideally located near Pingjiang road. This time the room was along the canal but we didn't hear the noise. In any case everything shuts at 10.30 pm. Ideally located and you can do a lot on foot from here. Don't know if they do breakfast: we ate outside. The staff are useless and it's the only downside to this pretty accommodation. It took the first guy over half an hour to check us in and he rang the room very late because he'd not scanned our passports properly. The following morning the next receptionist asked us for the passports again as the scans were not clear. Huge waste of time (get a new scanner????).

Dilapidated, dirty, dreadful serviceOn paper this place sounded really nice. In reality the bedroom carpets are filthy, the electrics intermittent, general state of the rooms and garden neglected, and breakfast was just about adequate. This place needs an overhaul, including a new manager. And, by the way, staff speak no English, not a major issue unless you don't speak Chinese and have issues to resolve. Our local guide tried his best to get things resolved. I cannot recommend this hotel.
