Clean, yet remote to the city

I booked in this hotel since my friends are living in Country Garden in Shunde, and I was upgraded free of charge as the type of room I booked was full. I got to this place from downtown Guangzhou by taxi. It costed me RMB$75 and took me 30 minutes, and I found it acceptable. The room I stayed was super big and could definitely fit a party of 20 people. The bedroom and bathroom were really clean surprisingly as I thought the hotels in China were not supposed to reach this level of cleanliness (like in Japan). Their beds were comfy enough, and the basic essentials were all provided. The very last thing I have to say is that my friends and I were asking the receptionist if she could call a taxi to pick us up from the entrance of the hotel. At first we were told that we had to pay RMB$10 extra, and we accepted, but the taxi driver ended up saying we had to pay RMB$40 extra. I would suggest taking a shuttle from the hotel then a taxi outside the gate of Country Garden to avoid this unnecessary charge.

    Not quite there, yet

Let me begin by saying we've been travelling to Guangzhou for over 15 years twice a year to attend the Canton Fair and have stayed at many hotels of varying ratings. This establishment caught my eye due to the price (very reasonable for Fair time) and photos of the room. There is a complimentary shuttle bus to the Fair which leaves at 8:30am and returns at 6pm but if you miss these you need to take a taxi. With travel time of approx an hour, it makes for a long day. Perhaps they could think about a second return bus at say 5pm? The room we were given in block 8 was wonderful - large, modern and very quiet with a balcony to let in fresh air. Free wi-fi as well which was a bonus, although the tea making facilities offer Chinese teabags only and no sugar. The staff at front of desk and reception are friendly and competent in English, although strangely they don't offer currency exchange. But it is at the restaurants & back of house that we were subjected to that implacable Chinese characteristic of ignoring westerners (because they can't or don't want to understand). Firstly I complained about some other guests (Chinese) who lit cigarettes in the no-smoking area at breakfast. No-one did anything and the guests just laughed at us as we moved to a table in a different area. Secondly, the communal toaster, coffee pot, condiment containers and surrounds were quite grotty. Obviously these are not cleaned daily and I almost gagged looking at our salt shaker that appeared as if it had some-one's nose pickings stuck on it. Our daily housekeeping was as haphazard. Toilet-paper roll not replaced (maybe they allocate a quota?) which was difficult to communicate when my husband had diarrhea. We received 2 newspapers but on the 3rd & 4th days delivery suddenly stopped. Likewise our complimentary fruit platter - not replenished. We still can't come to grips with having to pay to use the gym and/or swimming pool. From my perspective, hotel amenities should be included in the rack rate. This was a disappointment as my husband likes to do laps in the morning but I refuse to pay approx USD12 for a swim, no matter how beautiful the pool. Because this establishment is so far from everything, you're really confined to eating in-house. The "western" restaurant is terrible. We waited over half an hour for a bowl of soup and a serve of (cold) french fries. Then when I tried to sign the bill to our room, we were refused and told we had to pay cash or see reception to top up our holding deposit. Really? As if we were going to abscond without paying our USD10 meal. The Chinese restaurant upstairs is much better. The staff try hard to communicate and meals arrived within 10mins with a good dose of humour. Just goes to prove that old saying "when in Rome..." A nice touch that we've never come across before was a net-working party in the evening with complimentary snacks for Canton fair attendees. Club sandwiches, (hot) french fries, cookies, coke & beer were provided in the hotel lobby on 2 of the nights we were there. The first night there was also dumpling-making & traditional Chinese music performed by a local student - quite good. To sum up, I'm still not sure about this place. Yes, the room was great and the distance to Canton Fair not too bad. If you can cope with inconsistencies in service and food, it's probably worth a try. If we stay here again I'll be bringing Liptons teabags, sugar, uht milk, museli bars and maybe even some 2-minute cup moodles!

Probably best for locals rather than Foreigners

It feels a bit like a country club, but it's a bit old. Also, it doesn't look anything like the photo here on TripAdvisor. That said, the service was strong, and the breakfast buffet was pretty good. The other thing about it is that it is pretty far from, say, public transportation, so it's best if you have a car.

    China first stop

Comfortable room with daily service. Soft beds by Chinrse standard's. Resort has good facilities for a family; bowling, snooker, pool, badminton table tennis and a large in/outdoor pool. Buffet breakfast is good.
