Decent and poisedWisely positioned in old town Konigsberg/Kaliningrad's clean'n'green neighborhood - the old fashioned mansion hotel does offer convenient connection to where the action is, the smog city center. One does feel like holidaying in civilized world while staying here and occasionally opting out to events, walks, tours, shops and, incidentally, to the top eaterie in town, Celtic styled Pivovar restaurant, a stone's throw away. Alas, rooms' interior may call for attendance like a tap leak or table shaky (ours did), but staff is responsive, quick and overly friendly open to your address. The 5 stories miss an elevator (original ancient architecture for you) which makes climbing with heavy luggage an ordeal, what with no porter around. Rooms, importantly, got high ceiling so you instantly feel like in a castle. These are made up with soft bed, fridge and cable TV but, again, lack an air conditioner. Good we stayed in a cool season and didn't mind. Pricey canteen downstairs struggles to impress but is checked by non-imaginative cooking, They do have Wi-Fi but me, I couldn't operate their sole provided free - and slow - notebook. Being so controversial in all its aspects, the place delivers the goods in breaking comfortable and quite domestic. Why, we had a honeymoon couple next door who at other times would disturb sleep - well, they didn't. Somehow the hotel commands an air of benevolence so rare to other parts of Russia, and, perhaps, to other hotels. Just book lower floors, and you're arrived.

We had a nice room - positive experienceThe room was nice and big, (actually there were two rooms, a small entrance area and the bedroom itself) clean and convenient. There was a fridge and it was quiet. The breakfast was not so great as it was not clear how much it cost (they bill according to what you have). Staff were helpful and friendly but communication is a bit of a challenge if you don{t speak Russian. German works better than English (they also answer e-mails in German). The area is leafy and quiet, in an old part of town. There are busses nearby and it is quite easy to get a taxi into town. There is a 24 hour mini-market nearby. The bathroom was very big, probably suitable for wheechairs but not totally sure...They had a good price during the peak period of the world cup, when everywhere else prices rocketed, and they maintained my reservation for several months which I am very grateful for.
