    Awful stay

I am a key worker and was looking forward to my stay here. The hotel room was unclean. Dirty marks in walls, dirty bathroom floor and sink area. Unacceptable at any time but especially due to the covid situation. Will not be staying again.

    Dreadful, best avoided

Let's start with a positive -- check in around 6pm on a wet December evening was great. Ryan on the front desk was charming and brilliant. Sadly, the good review stops there. I was given room 340. The TV did not work. The HDMI cable into the back of the TV and in easy view was broken and bare cables exposed. I tried to get the TV working by pulling out the mini fridge ti see if the other cables were connected. Regretted it immediately -- think with dust and filth. Where is the Covid deep clean? Disgusting. Tried calling reception to get TV fixed and phone would just ring out with no answer. Went down to reception and he said the phone had not been ringing, so that's complaint number 2. Ryan moved me to room 336 which seemed better and the TV worked. I ordered from the room service menu. With the parsnip soup was two slices of white processed bread with butter or margarine sides facing each other. The piece on top was like toast it had clearly been left out all day, so the bread had dried out. Disgusting. In bed falling asleep and my hand went under my pillow only to find bare mattress and this was horrible. The sheet was too small for the bed. This made me feel really sick and uncomfortable. I got up and tried to get the sheet to fit, but it would not. See photo. This is shoddy and again in the time of covid where is the care and attention to cleanliness? Disgusting. Breakfast? One piece of advice dont do it! Disgusting. Bacon or sausage panini under their covid grab and go concept. Utterly inedible. Aside from the above the wifi in the room was rubbish, but the banana I saved from breakfast and ate for lunch was delicious!

    Fantastic copthorne

I have stayed in the copthorne on numerous occasions as I'm working in Manchester. I have to say that I have enjoyed my experience with every visit from start to finish, from the fantastic staff on reception (Ryan) the wee Welsh fella will always go above and beyond to assist you, there's Kevin the chef who is again always willing to go above and beyond, if I knew all of their names I would definitely commend them all. Given the situation we all face at the moment the very fact that these guys and girls go into work everyday and deal with guests from all over with no thought to the risk to themselves is something we all need to remember. The manager Chris is running a very good team and I can't wait to stay again. I hope that when this world virus ends these guys can get back to running a normal hotel as I believe the experience will be even better for guests. I for one will be making a point of staying when it's normal and buying them all a drink.

Much better than some of the reviews suggest

I've stayed here three times in the last four weeks or so whilst working in the area and I have to say that on each occasion I've always enjoyed my stay. Firstly, the staff are always cheerful, polite and professional. They've always made me feel welcome. And yes, as someone else mentioned, the reception area does smell nice! Secondly, the rooms I've stayed in are nice and clean - the bed is comfortable, and the decor is clean and fresh. It was clean, no musty smell and frankly not much different to a Premier Inn. The only difference being the granite desk in the corner. One thing that maybe lets it down is the chipboard effect cupboard that hides the fridge and the TV sits on. Ahhhh, the TV! That wonderful enigma that looks at you as you walk in, looking for the remote control to turn it on - excitement and expectations of what lies ahead as you contemplate the next few hours confined to your room because of covid! And that's where the fun finishes, because no matter what you do, what buttons you press or what words you shout at the TV you will not be able to get it to work! Three different rooms and only once have I managed to get it to work! I know the "no signal" screen off by heart, word for word. If you are staying, when you enter your room and the TV is on and has the welcome screen then jump for joy and dance round your bag! If the TV is off, then do as I do - look to the iPlayer for the radio - not even spare batteries in the remote (yes, I came prepared with my own Duracell AAA's this time) did the trick! My previous visit I asked at the desk, and they promptly sent up the maintenance guy (who was also very polite and helpful). He checked it and replaced the box on the back. It worked! But only for twenty minutes.I thought perhaps it was me - extra static in my socks? Phones interfering with the remote's frequency? But nope. No TV - and again, tonight, no TV. My only other gripe was the toilet on my first and second visit - two rooms next to each other but on separate occasions. The first time, as I went to the bathroom, it looked as though somebody had gone for a dump but hadn't flushed, so I thought the room hadn't been cleaned. Anyway, I flushed it and then checked on the rest of the room - bed made, linen clean and fresh, nothing raised my concerns. About an hour or so later I went to go for a pee and there was the same dirty brown water in the bottom of the loo. This happened a couple of times, and again in the morning - to both rooms on separate stays. I'm no expert but I think there's a problem with the plumbing - either that or I was sharing my room with someone who had a terrible diet! This visit there's no problem with the toilet - the TV isn't working but that shouldn't surprise me now. The room is tidy and clean. I have a bath this time - last two visits I had a shower. Never had any problems with the showers (same set up as in a Premier Inn if I recall) - and floors, as Bon Jovi once sang, are slippery when wet. Shower matts were provided on my last visits, but I never used them as I have a bit of common sense (unlike one of the previous reviewers) and know I'll need to take care when standing on a wet floor (insert rolling eyes emoji here). Not tried the bath yet, but it looks water-tight so I'm guessing it should be OK. Food is limited - I'm slowly working my way through the limited menu on offer - but it's nice. So far the Copthorne burger is my favourite. Breakfast again is limited, and collecting my brown paper bag with my juice, baguette, pastry and piece of fruit in the morning makes me feel like a school boy again. I half expect one of the staff to say "play nicely with the other children!". The limited choice is purely down to covid - so top marks for offering what they do. On the whole it's a decent hotel for the price (for me it's free!). I'd like to try it when the pandemic is over to see what the menu and the bar are like. If the TV worked I might have given them five stars instead of spending all night writing this review!

    What breakfast?

Staying in a hotel for work during covid is not necessarily a great experience. Copthorne does good job in providing hygeine confidence. But people working all day just want somewhere clean and comfortable, and something acceptable to eat - Copthorne feels clean and is certainly comfortable. The evening meal offer is very much pub-food. But the price! Pie, chips, pint and pudding £26. Bought in pie, frozen veg, nice chps, microwaved pudding. But what happened to breakfast from 7 to 9am? All I expected was a bacon roll, but the chef had gone by 7.45. I was offered juice or porridge. Not good enough. I should mention that the two members of staff I encoutered were courteus and professional
