Stinky, stickyMy colleague told me that this hotel is supposedly the newest in Hangzhou, but I am not sure how this is possible, unless we are living in the 1970s. Maybe they renovated the lobby? The carpets in the rooms and hallways are badly stained and buckled, and the furniture is original 1970s dark wood with worn-off red velvet from years of wear. The bathroom had black-stained grout, cracked tiles and creepy neon lighting. And it was cold. The whole hotelincluding the roomsreeks of years of cigarette smoke, and the room had a yellow tinge from the general disrepair. Likewise, the buffet had a fair selection, but it didnt feel clean. Although it was early morning, the tables were sticky and grease had been wiped with a wet rag that hadnt really removed the spills that were likely from the night before. The hotel rooms swipe card sleeve indicates that all hotel visitors must leave by 11:30 pm, and there is a pictorial card in Mandarin in the room; although I couldnt read the text, it was clearly an informational card about the transmission of HIV/AIDS. So this also made me wary about touching anything in the room, for fear of who has been using it over the last 30 years. And when I came back from breakfast, there was a cleaning woman standing outside my door; why was she standing there, not doing anything? Was she looking for visitors? Although I didnt see any vermin, I slept with the lights on to ensure that if there were any creeping around, they might be deterred from stepping into my luggage and onto me. On a positive note, the staff doesn't really speak English, but they are pleasant at the front desk and business centre. It was just too bad about all of the smoking men hanging around the lobby; I felt badly for the nice people having to inhale the incessant second-hand smoke. So... if you are an old man who smokes and who doesnt really care about about where he stays, then this hotel would be great for you. Otherwise, don't be fooled by the fact that this place is "new". (It's not!)
