    Nice, friendly place to stay

I spent three nights at Chel and vade in Jinja. The staff were friendly and welcoming; I must mention the receptionist, Rebecca is particular. I stayed in 'Roses' room. It was very clean, though not very big. The breakfast was average, though; and while the wi-fi was string in the eating area, it was hardly available in the room. It is not in the centre of Jinja, though walkable, but not more than five minutes away by boda. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend Chel and Vade!

    Past Its Prime

We are expats living in Uganda. We love to try new places whenever we get an opportunity. Based on reviews we decided to try this for a simple overnight stay. Dont bother. Before we even got to our rooms one of us needed to use the toilet. It was a squat toilet outside, the door didnt close at all and it was dirty. Our room was not ready, they were still trying to configure the bed arrangement which required moving some beds to another room. Yet, we had booked in advance and it was after 7 p.m. when we arrived. We sat in the outside dining room while we waited and noticed it needs an update in decor or at least a good dusting and varnish of the wood accents. Once the room was ready a young lady offered to help my husband carry our minimum amount of luggage (2bags). He told her he was fine to carry it, but she insisted. He still stated he was fine to do it and repeated she didnt need to. Once we began walking to the room she spoke very rudely in Luganda, the mzungu (white person) has bad manners. She did not realize we understand Luganda, but we let her know a little later in the evening and she was mortified, of course. But, it seemed her true worry was not that she had been rude, but that we mentioned we might tell her boss. As far as the room was concerned: torn mosquito nets that were too small for the bed, light in the bathroom didnt work, the bathroom door didnt close, the walls were dirty, the floors were dusty, we had to ask for a proper amount of towels, even thought they knew how many were staying, air conditioner didnt work in the room so they had to bring a portable one and it smelled musty. The sheets had evidence of bed bugs. Need I go on?

    Purgatory on Earth

The hotel staff are often rude. The basic essentials are either missing or broken. Broken shower heads, torn mosquito nets etc. Shower water is often cold and the owner is not customer centric and doesn't attend to complaints.

    Dont even think about it!

The rooms are small and dark. The sheets and towels are quite worn. The mosquito net doesnt fit the bed. The lounge is basic, as is the drink/food menu. The food is overpriced, 20,000UGX for a rolex, cmon. The staff is indifferent and inattentive. But it gets worse. When it was time to leave, they kidnapped us and held us for ransom. They required me to pay in advance via a wire transfer between banks. I paid the full amount, plus my transfer fee my bank charged of $25 USD, then sent her the confirmation receipt from my bank showing the full amount was transferred. However, when it came time to check out, the owner (who wasnt on site) told the staff that I had to pay the wire transfer fee that HER bank charged HER for an additional $20 USD. I refused, telling her she chose her bank and this method of payment and it was never disclosed to me that it was my responsibility. She wasnt satisfied, said she would come down in person, and that I was to wait. After waiting for an hour, our driver arrived and we attempted to leave. She instructed her staff to lock the gates and not allow us to leave unless we gave her $20 USD. After threatening to call the police, another worker listened to our story and made the decision to allow us to leave. The threat of being kidnapped by the hotel owner should never be a part of your stay. I would not recommend this place to our worst enemy. If you read this and still choose to stay, know you were duly warned, be sure to have the phone number of the local police handy if you do stay.

    HELL ON EARTH!!! Dont bother!!

I dont even know where to begin!! They started off by cancelling my booking a day before check in (claiming the place was booked out although Agoda let me book it a week in advance!!), then asked me rebook and pay through their own website which I found suspicious.. (am guessing they didnt want to pay Agoda their booking fee). On arrival at 7pm!! I had to wait another hour and half at reception (which lacked a proper stocked bar and the drinks were warm!!! ) because my room was not ready ( yet check in was slated for 12pm!!) I was finally ushered to a tiny and dated room, the mattress was just bent in!! I had to change my first room as it had some sort of insect which I was not sure wether a mosquito or tick!! The service at reception sucked and asking for anything took forever to be granted.. Changed to another cottage which had a smaller bed, but at least created an impression of more room to manoeuvre with my bags and stuff in there. The pics on line dont reflect what they have at all, and if I was not tricked into paying for the 3 day stay in advance, I would have left the next day.. but was stuck coz they had taken my payment. On the second day my room run out of toilet paper and it took an hour for them to replace it even though the place was clearly empty with only two other occupants!! On the third day of check out they were quick to let me know how I had to leave by 11. I told them I will leave when ready and that on my arrival I was meant to wait almost 2 hours, so it was only fair they let me stay extra time free of charge too.. When I was finally ready to leave(1pm) I could not locate anyone at reception to check me out.. eventually the nightmare of a receptionist / chef/ bar girl REBECCA showed up after 20minutes of sitting around and waiting for her. She then proceeded to demand for shs 20,000 as late check out fee.. I reminded her I had to wait on them during check in and also for everything (water, ice that never showed up and also warm sodas!!) and that it was only fair/ courteous she let it slide.. But she was adamant and instructed the gate man to block my exit!! I eventually paid the shs 20,000 but she still took about 30 minutes to locate my bill and hand over my receipt coz she claimed she had not received my booking fee.. I eventually told her I needed to leave so she needs to make a hand written receipt for me coz I was running out of time to drive back to kampala.. All in all this is the worst hotel I have ever had to pay for, worst service, dated place, no wi-fi as advertised and not even a free bottle of water!! I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THAT THEY STAY OPEN UNTILL THE WHOLE PLACE HAS BEEN OVERHAULED.. I will give it one star for the greenery and the fact that it actually exists !! DO NOT GO THERE!!
