Just as a small château should be

I had found this place in a French guide for places to stay Logis de France and couldnt resist the chance to stay in a château. The area is isolated, calm and very beautiful. The château is set well back off the road in the woods. We arrived just before nightfall and the château was just as I had hoped it would be. The exterior is really impressive and just how I would expect a small château to look. The owners were very welcoming. My room was small and not that impressive. However, family members were in a room in the old tower which was round and very unique. We were disappointed that the restaurant wasnt open that night but they gave us directions to a very good place in the charming nearby village of Bassoues. It was a dark and stormy night and when we returned to the château we all joked about it being haunted, it just had that wonderful aura with dark wood and long halls and a wide staircase. Plus the lights are on a sensor system. Breakfast in the large dining hall is very nice. The owners have a lovely cat and dog that makes the stay just that much more pleasant. I would definitely love to come back and stay longer and really explore the surrounding area. In addition, I found the prices to be very reasonable for this beautiful type of environment.

Impressive outside and nice owner but tired rooms and bad breakfast

Just came back from France and stayed here one night for my friend's wedding in the beautiful village of Montsquiou just down the road. The village is gorgeous and is your typical French small village, one post office, one pub, one church etc - beautiful. The drive to the chateau through countryside is impressive and you have the option of staying in the castle or in tents or cabins in its grounds. The castle rooms are a bit tired, very basic and don't even have a TV or tea making facilities. There is no room service and the bar is basically a tent stuck on to the side of the castle so its not authentic. The bed was very comfy though and the shower was hot and nice, but its not worth 100 euros. The breakfast was literally a couple of stale croissants and a yoghurt and when I asked if there was any cereal I was told no and offered nothing else. I was then charged 9 euros for this on top of the room, which was robbery. The lady was very nice and welcoming, but the rate needs to reduce for castle rooms as I felt ripped off.

Nice grounds but safety issues concerned me

Fire extinguishers have been removed from their holders around the chalet areas and there are no smoke alarms or carbon monoxide detectors in the chalets. If this doesn't bother you read on.... Beautiful grounds, totally stunning. Huge open spaces but also lots of private shady areas too. Lovely big pool but the smaller children's pool was full of dead insects and had a film of greasy suntan lotion (?) on it. Chalets are basic and a bit tired and the bathrooms are tiny and a little bit musty smelling at times. Beds were comfortable and we had a large veranda with lots of chairs. Didn't see the main rooms in the chateau. The owners were quite friendly. I would love to visit this part of France again as it was beautiful but I would stay somewhere else.

Nice castle in a beautiful garden but surrounded by a camping and with very limited service

Nice castle but limited service (e.g. limited opening hours of the reception, limited amenities in the room, on site restaurant/bar not open during the day, wifi not working). In summary poor value for money. The castle is surrounded by a camping mostly visited by Dutch tourists (the castle is owned and managed by a French-Dutch couple). This makes the whole experience of staying at the castle not authentic - you don't really feel like staying in the Gers. Also the mix of camping and hotel tourism don't really mix well. The "service" is overall more oriented towards the camping guests than the hotel guests.
