Better than expectedI was dreading my visit based upon some of the prior reviews. I was therefore pleasantly surprised to be allocated a modern block (John Burnett House), a large twin room with beds on either ends, and a nice common room with flatscreen TV which we had to ourselves. There were some great breakfast options, with even gluten free items being available, though there most have been more than 200 people there! Small complaints were that there was no towel rail in the bathroom and the heavy curtains didn't quite close leaving a chink for light to get through.

Cheerful, Simple Good Food at a price...I have stayed in Uni accommodation before but £130 per night for a twin room with breakfast, is a little steep. However, it served us well as we were there for a long weekend at the Fringe. Now in the summer there is a lot going on and no doubt that contributes to the university being able to charge higher rates - I don't have a problem with that as I also work for a university. Take advantage while you can. The rooms are basic en suite and somewhere to rest your head which is exactly what we wanted. Rooms are plain, have TV and tea/coffee tray. It is not 5*,4* or possibly 3* but it serves a purpose. All the staff are very pleasant and chatty when required - not over the top. The breakfast is very good. Lots of choice, porridge, continental and cooked breakfasts all offered in a buffet style. Quite a few of the military people performing at the Tattoo also stay here which is interesting. Catch the bus into town or walk.... takes 25 minutes at a steady pace to the Royal Mile. Arthurs seat is just out the back and it is nice to take a stroll up there for the view. Loads and loads to do but we concentrated on the Fringe. It is also nice and quiet being on the outskirts of town.

Cheap and CheerfulWe stayed at Chancellors Court during a weekend visit to Edinburgh; we were only really looking for a bed for the night but I must say that every expectation was exceeded. The room was perfect for our needs and the bathroom contained everything we needed. The staff were lovely and accommodating, we called reception to ask for the local taxi firm number and they volunteered to call them and arrange our taxi. A very courteous welcome was received when we returned from our night out at 3am! Breakfast was excellent, everything I could think of was there and it certainly helped to ease my tender condition. I usually visit Edinburgh every year for the Military Tattoo, I will certainly be staying here when I return

Cheap, and not so cheerfulThe modern is in an excellent location, at the foot of Arthur's Seat, part of the reason for picking it at a busy time of year when our ususal hotel was not available. On arrival the reception was cheerful and organised enough, plenty of directions to room, and to easy walks in the park. However, having negotiated the security system with the electronic key (these are normally Halls of Residence for students) to get into the building and then up the lift, the key didn't work on the door. So I had to traipse back all the way to the reception building, were they kindly replaced the key. The building was was it is, student accomodation, clean, basic. However, some downs, my bed creaked badly, and the signage left a lot to be desired, arrows pointing to rooms, but nothing to indicate how to leave the buidng. Coupled with a fault on the lift which meant it couldn't be called from upstairs meant negotiating a different part of the building, again with no indication of exit. Breakfast was in the conference centtre, buffet, but the plates were cold. Dinner had been i nthe bar, very nice and plenty of it. Pleasant grounds, and bery pleasant staff, many seemed to be students.
