A Mixed Experience but Worth Another Try!

I had been wanting to stay at Cave B for many years but the drive (4 hours from Portland) is just a little too long and the price has always been a little too high. But a 2,000-mile road trip last month took us through the area so we decided to finally give it a shot, plus I was able to get a mid-week rate of $250/night, which was probably due to the pandemic and low occupancy levels. There were definitely some ups and downs during our stay, some of which were out of Cave B's control. Overall, I would like to stay here again under more normal circumstances. We stayed in a second-floor king Cavern Room. The view looked like it was simply stunning. I believe that these rooms probably have one of the best, unobstructed views on the property. However, since they are adjoining rooms, you have to be prepared to hear your neighbors. I would definitely NOT stay in a ground level Cavern room as the noise from the room above would probably be very noticeable and there is a wooden walkway to the second floor rooms that is very noisy. The bed was very comfortable and I loved the big soaking tub. The overall cleanliness of the room was good, as well! There were two issues that were out of Cave B's control that really impacted our stay. First, we happened to be traveling during peak wildfire season with some of the worst air quality on record for the entire Pacific Northwest. The smoke was so thick that we could barely see the gorge outside our balcony. The other issue was, of course, the COVID-19 pandemic. The pool and spa were closed because of it, and the restaurant was doing room service. The disappointing thing about the room service was that everything came slopped into paper boxes with plastic utensils. No plates were provided. It didn't make sense as the room had glasses and coffee mugs/coffee maker, etc. It seemed like they were using it as an excuse to save money by not washing dishes or something. I don't know, but it's hard to enjoy a $50 steak out of a paper box with plastic utensils. Otherwise, the food was quite good! I was disappointed that a resort fee was still being charged when most of the resort amenities were closed due to the pandemic. Lastly, one theme that seems consistent in previous reviews, is the inexperienced staff. I have to agree that for this level of property, some staff training would help. But I can also appreciate that it may be difficult to retain staff here due to the remote location. I would just like to impress upon management that a little front desk training could go a long way. It doesn't take much to learn how to greet guests properly with a smile and look away from your cell phone when you hear someone coming into the lobby. Overall, I would like to give Cave B another shot sometime in the future once we're through the pandemic and definitely not during wildfire season! I would like to be able to enjoy that gorgeous pool overlooking the gorge and sit comfortably on the balcony with coffee in hand to watch the sunset.

    Yurt overnight and dinner

Tentative first trip during the pandemic... staying fairly close to home. It's an easy 2.5 hours from Seattle with mountains, desert and basalt rock formations. The Yurts are surprisingly large, giving the sensation of a suite. The floor is concrete and otherwise it's a tent with door, windows and oculus like the one in the Parthenon. I would gladly return. Dinner was excellent and we were outside even in October. This has to be the top restaurant between Seattle and Minneapolis. Very fine wine list at reasonable prices.

    24yr Anniversary

We arrived yesterday afternoon 10-12-20 for our stay. We have been to this location several times over the past 20 yrs. This time we stayed in the cave room #17. We have always had the best service and experience. While walking back after parking our car I noticed a very heavy sewer smell coming from the vineyard which I found strange due to we have stayed before and not had this experience. We decided to walk to dinner a couple hours later and the sewer smell was worse. So this morning getting ready to leave I noticed one of the septic tanks purging raw sewage and it was flowing down the road into a drain that was releasing down the hill towards the river. Not sure how long this had been going on. I did notify the resort. Seems to me they would have an alarm notification for this type of issue and not have a customer notify them. I love this place and have many great memories here. I hope they make the proper corrections moving forward. We will be back again.

    Dinner at Tendrils!

Had a reservation at 530. Place is extremely scenic n picturesque! Wish we would of got there earlier to enjoy the views more. We were greeted warmly n seated right away. Our waiter was gracious, polite, and very attentive without being overbearing.he was exceptional. Our meals were wonderful. Husband had tenderloin n it was divine. I had a scallops and risotto dish which I loved. The only negative thing about was the risotto was a little greasy but overall a tasty dish. Wine was great! We were there On Sunday Nov 15, the day a state shutdown was announced again. Want to go back soon!
