MehCigarette smoking appears to be openly tolerated on site. Reception needs more support during busy times. Pool closed despite state allowing reopening. Kind staff retrieved a toy I had dropped from our balcony into closed pool area - kudos!!

Cove restaurantAll you can eat $10 meal. Not great. Watch your drink tab. Should be Called fry night. Server was nice but not really a restaurant . Meal from 1-7. Quiet a hike to get down to the dining area. Wont be returning .

Nice hotel but with recommendationWe are a family of 4 (all adults) who stayed at the Catalina Holiday Inn during the weekend of 8/8-8/9/20. Hotel was clean, check-in easy, pool and spa closed due to COVID-19 - but we had already been informed of such. Signs everywhere describing safety protocols - face coverings required, as is social distancing. This is the first trip we have taken for months, so were a bit skeptical anyway. The complaint I have is that the shuttle which transports guests to and from the town of Avalon does not appear to follow the posted rules. Guests from multiple families were crowded together on the hotel shuttle. And there were times when we saw no face coverings at all. We spoke twice to the front desk personnel who assured us that the shuttle drivers all knew the proper protocol. Each family was to be transported separately. That was not happening. We started speaking up which was a bit awkward, but it worked. If you choose this hotel, it is a nice location with a 10-15 minute walk to the downtown area. Front desk personnel extremely helpful and friendly. No complaints other than the shuttle procedures. Just be safe!

Kids liked the bunk beds, but hotel is mediocreAlthough the shuttles are frequent, it's more convenient to stay on the main strip by the beach. The whole property needs to be remodeled including the shuttles with dirty and ripped seating. My kids liked the bunk beds, but their small TV did not work. The Cove restaurant wasn't bad and is convenient with nice servers. You cannot store your baggage after check out, so will have to store it at the boat port if you're not leaving until late in the day.

Avoid "The Cove" and if you do watch out for drivers leaving you out for an hour - There are better HotelsWe planned our family trip and actually took a risk going here. Since we are in Covid and there were no restrictions at the time in LA county. I regreet using my @americanexpress miles as they are useless. I have been a customer for a very long time. @ihg membership is also useless as I could reach them during my stay. So the story beings.. If you are planning a trip pick a less expensive hotel that is near the avalon circle. Do not use any point system to book. It turned out to be cheaper to actually book from websites and you will be right next to the water. Holiday Inn: One of the worst I have ever stayed in. The staff are so rude. The service so bad it is not even worth us driving 8 hours to take the ferry ride. My son was so dismayed he just made the discussion to stay in doors. Like I pointed out the staff were very rude. I have to give props to some staff members at night. They were definitely "night and day" from the day time staff. The Cove: Do not eat here if you value your stomach or any organ. They have a deal that they push but in the end they serve spoiled food and get mad if you complain. The manager is the worst. The staff are as far as I am able to tell awesome. There are a lot of other options if you go down to the bay so to speak. There is a great take out chinese restaurant if you want cheap eats. They actually serve warm Beignet in the morning. Like I said avoid the cove if you make the mistake of staking at the Holiday Inn. I would recommend doing the golf cart and also the submarine while you are there. I only did the golf cart but it is amazing to drive around Avalon.
