art and history under one roofA while ago I stayed at a charming place in the village of Muro, Corsica. Its magical atmosphere took us back right to the 16th century when the palace was originally owned by the Count Giuliani. This is Casa Théodora, a boutique hotel hidden in the hills near the city of Calvi overseeing the rough coastline. Even if only in past people were regularly kidnapped on the seashore by the pirates of the mediterranean, Casa Theodora still radiate today the sense of safety to the guests. I remember entering the house and suddenly being struck by the beauty of the frescos on the ceiling painted by the owner Alexandre Gianninelli. After a quick glance I spontaneously I said to him: Your are like a little Michelangelo Buonarroti!. Alexandre smiled at me, raised his eyebrows and replied: Why little? Im like the big Michelangelo!. This is what I treasure about an artist. The strive for greatness without compromising for good enough. And this is what Casa Théodora is about. It reflects the quality of Alessandros art works, enthusiasm and unique lifestyle. But its only half of the story. His wife Mirjam meticulously ensures that every details is taking care of. She is so passionate about food that its still fresh in my memories the scent of her baked croissants in the morning. I stayed at Casa Théodora only three days. Yet, its melange of history and art of turned our time into a mystical experience.

Historic reflection of life King Theodore of CorsicaOne of the most delightful hotels I have stayed in - loving restored to share the history of King Theodore of Corsica. The rooms are individual in style with beautiful decor and artwork and it is no wonder homes and garden magazines and fashion brochures have featured in it their media. The breakfast was amazing with the bread cooked by the owner of the home. Its five star luxury without the branding and run of the mill mass market hotels, and the best bit - no tv in the room!

Enjoyed our stay in this special placeIt has nothing to do with generic hotel brands. The place is really different from any other. We had a warm welcome from the host and her team. The swimming pool in the cave was a very nice experience. We had a lot of good advises about the places to visit and where to eat in the neighborhood. We stayed one week and it is the perfect place to enjoy discovering Balagne and Cap Corse areas (Northern Corsica). We appreciated sleeping in a calm village, 15 minutes away from the crowded (August timeframe) coast.

So particoularA house in a remote village in Corsica, very nice. Perfect ospitality, great rooms, not to mention the cleaness. The owner will tell you the interesting story of the house, owned by a old family. If I may, a little expensive.

DisappointingDisappointing We had originally booked for five nights on the basis of apparently positive reviews, however, after one night we decided to leave as the property simply was not suitable for us. The bathroom was mouldy, the wardrobe was in the bathroom and the shower was broken. The accommodation did not fit the description of a superior deluxe room. Basic amenities one would expect in superior lodgings such as a mini fridge and ironing board were not available. As a consequence you had to ask for ice and for an ironing board - these were given quite willingly ( by the staff who checked us in), however, it felt like an unnecessary effort for both guests and staff. This was compounded by my husband's first interaction with the actual host was very terse as she got unnecessarily agitated as he got near ( unknowingly ) to the private part of the hotel. This was confusing to my husband as the doorway he tried to enter had previously been given as the access to the pool which was supposedly available at any time. This was not the welcome he was expecting and really set the tone for our interactions with the host which did not feel welcoming at all. In fact we felt like unwelcome guests in somebody else's house instead of paying guests - A cost which was not insubstantial at 160 per night! This was in direct contrast to Paul and the hosts daughter who checked us in and went out about their way to try and make us feel at home. As we were about to check out (after only two nights ) the host said that we could look at another room, this was declined on the basis that the hotel, whatever the room, would not be the relaxing experience we had hoped for given the intrusive nature of the host. A closer look at other reviews will reveal that we are not alone in having this particular experience -a shame as we were really looking forward to a relaxing five night stay. Despite giving notice that we intended to leave after 24 hours thus giving the ability to resell the room is a request for just one night refund was refused. This review was also put on the Booking.com site where I originally booked and the hotels response was both personally insulting and inaccurate which only serves in my opinion to prove my point about the hotels approach to some of its customers.
