Disappointing on the wholeWe stayed here for several nights in October 2020 while on vacation in Portland. Overall, I was not impressed. Dont come here expecting a classic hotel. I knew this going in and tend to like modern design. The public spaces of the hotel were very beautiful, especially the lower lobby, and the hallway art was cool. The room was fine; the design was very modern: polished concrete floor, an open closet, white walls, etc. The room was on the smaller side, but there was ample storage space (drawers, etc.), which made it better. The desk was very small; as a business traveler, its lack of depth (it barely fit a laptop) would have been annoying, but it was fine for vacation. There was a chaise lounge; its placement in front of the window made closing the curtains difficult and the design of the chaise made it an uncomfortable piece of furniturebasically, it had you at a 45-degree angle: bad for napping, bad for watching TV, bad for reading. A furniture piece clearly chosen for aesthetics rather than function. We both commented that a simple chair would have sufficed! The bed was very comfortable. The bathroom had lots of light and a walk-in shower. To reduce waste, the hotel uses mounted bottles of body wash, shampoo, and conditioner; annoyingly, our body wash was empty on arrival. If youre going to do the reusable amenities thing, have housekeeping fill them. No one likes having to call for body wash after starting a shower and discovering there isnt any. The hotel provided a glass jug in every room and encouraged you to use the filtered water dispensers on every floor to fill them. Nice way to reduce plastic waste. However, on the 9th floor (where our room was located), the dispenser had such a trickle of a flow that it took forever to fill up the bottle. This was fixed by going to the floor above or below for a normal flow, but its in the same category as the shampoo, etc.: if youre going to do it this way, make sure the equipment works. Theres a trash can next to the water dispenser into which guests placed waste from the takeout theyd ordered (I suspect because their-room trash cans are so small); it took two days for housekeeping to empty this trash can. Service was a mixed bag. The staff at the front desk varied in their helpfulness. The person who checked me in could have cared less about my experience; he was the same person who checked me out, and he didnt even bother to ask how my stay was. He similarly communicated a disinterested vibe whenever you passed the desk in the lobby. I arranged with this same person for a breakfast bag to be delivered every morning (this is how theyre doing breakfast, and the bag is free for elite members); the bag didnt appear the next morning because he forgot to make the arrangement despite discussing it with me. This same person offered no meaningful advice when we asked where to grab some coffee in the morning (e.g., there are a few places around here). A female colleague of his working the desk managed to communicate the same almost cultivated disinterest in helping guests. Thankfully, a couple of the other people working the desk were helpful and nice. None of the front desk staff at this hotel wear uniforms; they wear casual street clothes. I guess that was supposed to make them cool or more approachable; it didnt compensate for the aloof attitude of too many of the staff. The breakfast situation at this hotel is annoying. Due to COVID-19, the restaurant is not open for breakfast (despite being open for dinner and drinks). And the hotel is not even brewing coffee in the morning. Come on. Instead, they are charging $5 each day (free for elite members, at least) to drop off a breakfast bag at your door. The contents of this bag, however, was an un-filling sugar bomb: a container of flavored yogurt (which featured, each day, between 27g-30g of sugaras much as a soda or candy bar), a cup of orange juice (more sugar!), and an orange. You then got to leave the hotel and head to a coffee shop if you wanted coffee (with that front desk staff member uninterested in making a recommendation about finding one or having any advice about which were open/closed, etc.). I found it really annoying that I could have stayed at the (cheaper) Hampton Inn just down the block and paid nothing for a much more complete and much healthier breakfast offering. And come on...brew a pot of coffee. Also annoying at this hotel: parking. The valet is not operating due to COVID-19. The agent at check-in said this left our options to be street parking (largely metered during the day around the area) or paying $35/night to self-park in a lot across the street. We parked in the lot, which is surrounded by homeless people living in tents. On three mornings of our stay, homeless people were sitting in the lot and actively shooting-up near our car. It did not feel unsafe so much as sad. But it also felt objectionable to pay $35/day to park in an untended, unsecured surface lot with drug addicts and homeless people. Due to COVID-19, daily housekeeping service was not provided. I understand this, though other hotels have offered at least a mid-stay cleaning on longer stays like oursthis one didnt, and when I stopped to ask for some housekeeping needs, the first thing the staff member on duty reminded me was that housekeeping service is not available (how about starting with, what kind of service do you need?). We were able to ask for the trash to be removed and for new towels. Annoyingly, when the new towels were brought to the room, they were placed inside the door (rather than bathroom) and the old towels, which we had neatly placed into a pile on the floor, were not removed. It just seemed extra lazy; we both remarked that the safety element of it didnt hold water as we watched the housekeeper on our floor each day work without a mask, despite all of the signage about masks being required. The location of the hotel, in the Pearl District, is solid for exploring Portland, which each access to downtown and surrounding neighborhoods on both sides of the river. The area is indeed plagued with homelessness (though, sadly, this not limited to only this area), and it was unusually quiet during COVID-19. That said, it was central and there were interesting shops, restaurants, and coffee places within easy walking distance. Overall, however, a disappointing experience. The hotel could be great, but it was tough to look past the service issues. I recognize that COVID-19 poses unusual conditions for hotels, but Ive seen other properties in which Ive stayed during the pandemic handle them much more successfully than this hotel. I cant say this would be among my top choices when returning to Portland.

All Around Excellent!I have never staying at this hotel while in Portland. What an absolute delight! From the moment I walked in the lobby I felt welcomed. The casual yet professional manner of the staff is perfect! Keondre and Tyler are the BEST! Both staff members are some of the best I have ever encountered with a Hilton property (I am a diamond member so I frequent Hilton often). The rooms a creatively modest yet so very functional. I, personally loved the configuration of the amenities in the rooms. Everything was spotless. The bed was very comfortable. I loved having the opportunity to refill my water jug anytime I wanted from the filtered water right outside by door - this hotel is very environmentally friendly! The common spaces were comfortable and functional. The restaurant had a nice happy hour from 4-6 and then a nice dinner menu - the staff in the restaurant was great! As a Hilton honors member the breakfast was perfect for me - Orange Juice, a piece of fresh fruit and a Tillamonk yogurt. Delivered to your door at a time you ask for in the morning. I have absolutely no negative comments to say about this hotel. My only regret is that I hadn't known about this "hidden gem" before this trip. Thank you Canopy team!

Our 2nd Canopy Hotel and I'm a fan!We stayed at a Canopy Hotel in Dallas and loved the concept. Really loved the Canopy Hotel in Portland. The Pearl District was a great place to stay. Lots os restaurants and bars within walking distance and it felt very safe. Hotel was nice and seemed to fit in perfectly in the neighborhood. Nice and comfortable room. Really liked the bathroom. One of the best hotel gyms I have seen.

Best service in Portland!I cannot say enough good things about this property. Everything was fantastic from before we even checked in to after we checked out. Brace yourself for impact, this is going to be a novel. So this review starts about a week before check in. I booked this hotel and coming from states away, I was unsure what the climate was going to be like given whats broadcasted in the news about Portland. I called one night to ask some questions about the area and got a nice guy named Kyle. The very next morning one of the people I was traveling with called as well and got Tyler again, and when I called a few days later I got.. have you guessed it? Tyler lol (Does this guy have any days off? haha) Tyler was great, he was so patient in answering all of our questions- never once trying to rush use off the phone. He gave great tips and honest opinions about what to expect on our trip which was so helpful in preparing. We probably scared him during our stay when we came down to the front desk and said Are you Tyler?, we looked like creeps but just wanted to put a face to the name, Sorry Tyler! haha I knew from those conversations that we made the right decision in picking this hotel. Moving on to the arrival. After a very long, exhausting, and even emotional day of traveling, we arrived at the hotel. There was a first set of doors we got through that led us to a small waiting area with another set of doors at the end and then needed to use the phone to inform them we had a reservation. I absolutely loved that. After checking in and getting our room key, anytime we came into the hotel, we could just scan our key for access. It helped us feel super safe and secure during our stay knowing that there were not going to be any people wandering the property who did not belong. (I feel every hotel should do this, at least during overnight/evening hours) But back to the check in, I am sad I did not get the names of the two gentleman at the check in counter but they were very kind and even offered us recommendations on where to grab a bite within walking distance. This was so helpful as we were starving. (BTW- their recommendation couldnt have been better, Cheryls on 12th is the place to go, we even went back the next day because it was so good) The aesthetic of this hotel is so charming. The furnishings were so well put together and the bed was really comfortable. The restaurant and bar were closed due to Covid but I have no doubt in its day it was the place to grab a cocktail. I loved that the luggage racks are built into the closet area, great design technique as it made unpacking and packing quick, easy, and convenient. The hotel is located just a couple short blocks away from a row of restaurants, bars, and shopping. This was helpful as we didnt have a car and needed to walk to all locations. Also, the gym is up on the top floor and has a patio outside of that and the panoramic views of the city up there are gorgeous. It snowed during our stay so the rooftop pics of the city being covered by snow were one of a kind. Check out was easily as convenient, as a Hilton member, I have the app so check out was just a one click process and I received my statement in my email within seconds. I waited inside the hotel until my uber arrived. Of course, as soon as we got on the freeway, I realized I left my water bottle behind. When I arrived at the airport I called the hotel and sure enough I left it on the counter in the lobby. I think I spoke to a David? Dan? If you are reading, I am so sorry I forgot your name but I want to say maybe David answered and was so kind in helping me find a way to get it home to me (I did not have enough time to head back before my flight). Here we are a week later and I received my Hydraflow in the mail. Thank you so much David! As someone who has stayed at dozens of properties (most of them being Hilton), I will say that this property surpassed all of my expectations. There were about 6 Hilton properties in the Portland area, even one a block away from this property but I am so grateful I chose this one because the experience here was amazing. As you can see, I had a lot more to say about the service than the hotel itself which means something because the property is absolutely BEAUTIFUL! I always have a ton to say about the property and not much about the staff but the staff here truly cares about their guests which makes a world of difference when the hotel will be your temporary home during your stay. All in all, I cannot wait to come back and try out the hotel when more restrictions are lifted. And to anyone looking to stay in the Portland area, this has got to be your first pick! You will not be disappointed; beautiful property, great rooms, comfortable beds, and passionate staff- what more can you ask for? Thank you Canopy Portland for making my first trip since Covid truly worth it!
