    A beautiful well maintained site.

A great campsite right next to the beach. We were fortunate enough to have a pitch for our caravan right next to the beach which was idyllic. Staff are always available and helpful. The location of the site means that most areas of the island are easily accessed.

there should not have been a camping at this site

Our family stay at Camping Merendella wasn't the best possible because of two different reasons. There were many small irritations which added up: we booked a bungalow. When we arrived in the evening, the warm water did not work. A kind employee of the camping gave is another, equal bungalow where we did have hot water. Here, the outside light did not work and after a day, we ran out of gas for cooking. This happened in the evening and (in the low season), there was nobody on site who could help with this and nobody picked up the telephone. We received a schedule for activities which writes that the pool is open until 8 pm. However, when we arrived at 7 pm at the pool, it was closed: winter season. The staff at the counter was very friendly but spoke hardly any English. Enough for booking, but not for explaining that we had some problems. As a biologist, I noticed that the trees which give shadow are large Alder trees, Alnus glutinosa. These are specific for wetland areas. In fact, the entire camping is build at a place which used to be a coastal wetland, which is in the entire Mediterranean basin a highly endangered and rare kind of area. A remnant of this kind of area is still situated on the camping site. Such an area should have been a highly protected nature reserve, not a camping. What is left could be used to tell visitors about this rare type of natural area (make a wooden walking trail through with some information signs, for instance). Instead, there are signs that this coastal wetland remnant is slowly, step by step, filled in with soil, stones and construction waste. Such a shame. With such a wet area at the camping site, I would expect a rich insect life, and at least some mosquitos. There were none at all. This is probably very appreciated by most camping guests, but to me, it makes me very worried what this camping does to the natural environment. Do they use insecticides to make our stay more pleasant? This is a worrying thought, I do not like to contribute to the destruction of nature by staying on this camping. our main goal of the holidays was to enjoy the unspoiled nature and natural landscapes of Corsica. If all you want is a holiday at the beach: this could be the place for you, in the main season, when the staff is presumably present for more hours and best if you speak French. If you are a nature lover, I advise to go somewhere else instead.

    Bring Speedos (and earplugs)

Where to start? Firstly, the place isn't terrible, it's just not as good as it could be. On arrival our welcome was friendly and efficient, we had booked a chalet which was described on their website as being on the "mountain" side of the campsite (as as opposed to the "sea" side). We opted for this as we thought it might be more peaceful to be away from the bar and therefore a quieter part of the site. Big mistake. The campsite is next to THE main road going towards and from Bastia. This road is busy night and day. A brief look at Google maps would have made this clearer to us, but the idyllic image portrayed on the campsite's own illustration does not make this clear. Still, a bit of road noise is one thing, the big problem came from the campsites immediate neighbour, a restaurant called U Catagnu. Someone who works here, it may be management, it may be staff, I don't know; but someone in there evidently enjoys annoying the people staying on the campsite by blasting out loud (and I mean LOUD!) music in the dead of night. This happened on two separate occasions during our stay there. The first time at half past midnight on Sunday morning and then again at 2am on Wednesday morning. Fortunately, I always travel with ear plugs and could block most of the sound out. The same could not be said for the Italian family who were ahead of us in the queue to complain about the noise at reception the next morning. We were fobbed of with a "nothing we can do about it" response. In fairness the staff at the campsite have no control over the behaviour of their neighbours, but they should be aware that they will lose business if this continues. Another small niggle, as with most swimming pools in France you will not be allowed to swim in the campsite pool unless you have a small, skintight swimsuit (e.g. Speedo). This rule is enforced by the pool staff, which is fair enough, rules are rules. I would suggest however that the staff might take a little less pleasure in enforcing this. The young man who informed me that my swimming trunks were unsuitable for use in the pool was polite enough, but clearly relished exercising his power over the "dress code". There are also strict rules about leaving footwear in little lockers on the way in. The rest of the site is fine, it's a nice looking place, with a perfectly acceptable beach. Residents have access to loungers near the bar at the beach, but take care not to attempt moving them. The barman will be out to remonstrate with you should you try.

If you would like to have a nice and fun vacation with your family this is the rong place!!

Place is beautiful, food is very expensive and there like 10000 rules: you cant enter the pool without a speedo, and you cant enter the hydromassage pool with kids, also if you wanted to have a lovely experience on water slides there are a ton of rules for the those as well. The Poole is right next to the sea and you cant enter the pool if youve got some sand on your body, so you have to shower, but you cant shower in the pool shower because theres a rule for that as well, you need to walk to the other side of the campaign!! So then we decided to leave (like the lifeguard told us).
