Nothing to write home aboutWe chose this hotel for its proximity to the motorway - we were returning from Switzerland. I booked it months ago, and they took the card payment almost at once. Had we had to cancel I dread to imagine the hassle there would have been to get our money back, the French being as tight-fisted as they are. I made sure I had the credit-card statement with me to prove I had paid! In the event, no problem at all. First glance at the place had me thinking of the Bates Motel in 'Psycho'. The room was a tiny but clean box and had a 'wet room' bathroom. We used to stay at 'Logis de France,' small independent hotels, but they seem often to have become rather seedy and overpriced. Now we opt for these faceless chains of hotels which are at least clean and cheap. We considered having a meal there The restaurant looked decent, but the menu featured a picture of Chef Renard, a rather creepy looking cove: Norman Bates again? We decided to have a drink while making our minds up and repaired to the garden. Two white wines, please, waitress. Sorry, you can't have alcohol except with a meal. WHAT?? This is France in 2018 on a Saturday night, not Carmarthen on a wet Sunday circa 1954! No dice: no meal.We put a picnic together from bits and pieces we had in the car. Wine included! Breakfast was OK. Time was, the 'Continental' breakfast was coffee, rolls, butter and jam. Now there's lots more, cheese, meat, yogurts, fruit. And instead of 8 francs it costs 9.50. Mainly aimed at the Dutch and the Germans, no doubt. I was a bit worried about security. A footpath runs just beyond the hotel boundary's flimsy hedge. This path runs round a lake and is thronged with of joggers and dog-walkers. Burglar Guillaume would find it child's-play to be in and out of the grounds to do a bit of thieving either from room or car. I did find that a bit of a worry. I wouldn't praise or recommend the hotel particularly but neither would I warn against staying there. It is certainly quiet enough for a good night's sleep. And cheap.

Outstandingly helpfulOur campervan broke down outside Metz on a Friday evening and it took until Wednesday to source the part and to fix it. Julien and his colleagues were extremely helpful in our dealings with the garage and, when their Campanile was fully booked they arranged alternative accommodation and our transport to it. In the meantime we explored Metz which made up for the delay to starting our proper holiday. Thank you! The hotel was comfortable, clean and quiet, despite proximity to the main road. The food was excellent. We will us it again.

nice easy stayWe had a stop-over in Metz for one night - the Campanile was a nice stay, especially for the price. The room had plenty of space, the shower was great, the bed very comfortable, the desk area and tv were nice and the wifi was good. The staff was very hospitable and accommodating.

Some positives, but rather more negatives....The positives are the location is very close to the autoroute and the local business school. The location next to the lake is also quite pleasant. The mattress and pillows were actually quite comfortable, this is always good news! The negatives are the hotel says it's dog friendly button order to to check in or check out you have to go into the restaurant building where there are no dogs allowed... Only a minor issue. However It also meant that as a lone traveller (with dog) I couldn't eat in the hotel at all! Not great after a full day driving... The rooms are rather small and laid out like a motel on two levels... this may mean some noise from people walking past your door and noise from above or below. The location is my real concern, the neighbourhood is quite rough looking, the place is overlooked by many hi-rise flats, the carpark is almost completely unlit and they have no security cameras at all. Honestly, I didn't feel safe and was quite concerned about parking my fully loaded car here. I wouldn't recommend staying here... Pay a little more and go elsewhere would be my advice.
