Room with an authentic viewFirst of all - it's number 413! :) The directions provided are spot on, save for the number. Jot down Laura's telephone number as well, you may need it to call and she or a friend will nip and let you in, hand over the keys etc. It's on the 3rd floor with a steepish stairwell and no lift, but the apartment itself is lovely. It is basic. No getting away from that, consisting a double bedroom, a single room (could be a very cosy double) shower/wash room and kitchen/diner. The view from the double bedroom is great :) off the grand canal on one of the busier more industrial arterials, if you want a glimpse of authenticity it's a great spot. It can get noisy in the mornings though! The bed is ok; not the best, not the worst. There's a good barber just over the other side, an internet cafe just over the bridge on your right, a pizza takeout place just a little further on from that and a supermarket pretty much opposite that on your left. A vaparetto stop just opposite the apartment also, great for 41/42 (if you want to go to Murano, this is perfect) (get the 5 back to San Marco square though, it's quicker!) You're up in the North West section in the jewish quarter about 10 mins walk from the train station, or a couple of hops on the bus. The washing machine works fine, the heating works fine (if you remember to turn it on! doh!) there's a little table there with what you need to have a light supper in if you fancy. Light is perhaps a little bit dingy. Shower cubicle leaked a bit when we were there. Nothing major though, you'll likely be out and about most of the day and night anyways! There's a little tourist trap restaurant just this side of the bridge. It's not cheap and it's not good but if you like grumpy restauranters who clearly think you're there to service them, it's a giggle. Otherwise, you can do much much better for much cheaper. Laura was really accomodating and let us leave our bags there while she prepped for the next guests so we didn't have to lug them about town on our leaving connection day. Definitely make sure your phone is charged and has a connection in Italy as Laura doesn't live on site! It's pricey for what it is if you look at the apartment and servicing like a hotel perhaps, but if you like to be left to your own devices, and stay somewhere with a bit of authenticity and a nice 'real' view then it's lovely. It's worth bearing in mind, you're paying for the apartment also, so i'd say it would be great if you can fill both rooms! 2 friendly couples could definitely squeeze in there.

Failed contactWe arrived, as we had told Laura, at about 4pm, no-one was there so we tried ringing her with no luck- the phone number seemed to be out of order. After repeated tries by both us and a helpful waiter in a nearby cafe using his own mobile, we gave up as it was now 6pm. Luckily we found an apartment let by a nearby hotel and also we hadn't paid any deposit to Laura. When we returned to England I rang her, on the same number as we had been using in Italy, and got a reply. She claimed she had been in and her phone had been working fine! So watch out and make sure your arrival arrangements are clearly understood and that she will meet you there at a specified time to let you in.

What a view!San Giobbe was a wonderful place to stay. My girl friend and I arrived late, Laura called to welcome us and give directions to a bridge she was waiting at with her dog. She even called a few times to make sure we were on the right track and not lost. It was so lovely that she personally walked us to the property and filled us in on things we could see and do on the way, especially seeing as it was getting dark and we just endured a series of disastrous events getting to Venice from London. The place was in the process of being renovated but we were still very impressed with the offering (2 bedrooms, kitchenette, bathroom), considering the very affordable price. We weren't expecting the glorious views of the water, bridges, boats, the beautiful architecture of our neighbours opposite (plus washing lines!) all set amidst the low murmur of daily business taking place below. It felt like an authentic experience that we wouldn't have had if we'd stayed at a hostel. We talked to local restaurateurs as we came and went every day (I even dropped an air cooler piece out the window and someone below was kind enough to bring it to us within a few seconds) and there was always a gelato/pizza/pasta shop within a short stroll (high on our priority list). The place was close enough to everything but tucked away just enough for some privacy and quiet. We met some friends and were able to use our place to entertain (not much of a nightlife scene so home was the place to party). The only strange thing was when it came to paying for the accommodation a girl who wasn't Laura came to collect the payment and since she couldn't speak English we were convinced she was some random con artist until we confirmed with Laura and, still a bit skeptical, made her sign our handmade contract saying she picked up the money!

avoidWe followed the various instructions and called Laura on arrival. However we were told that the apartment was not available and should not have been made available by the website. Laura happened to have another apartment which she charged the same price for but which was smelly, not very clean and not up to the same standard as the advertised apartment. It was in a convenient location and Laura was helpful.
