  Visiting the Lodge

  This lodge is an example of the hard work of many young men during the depression. This beautiful lodge is the product of Work Project Administration that help build America's National and State Park infrastructure. Not many buildings remain in our nation that were built in the 1930's. This is a well run hotel with cabins, lodge rooms, indoor pool and a nice restaurant to round out a fun stay overlooking the Illinois river and 20 mins to downtown St. Louis.

  Changes needed

  The nostalgia of the lodge is dwindling as the quality of the stay is decreasing. Our restaurant experience was poor as the quality of the food is not what it once was. In addition, the inattentive waitress, despite the restaurant practically being empty, was less than desirable. Our room was dirty as we found a fruit pit on the floor, as well as pieces of candy. I recommend some serious changes occur to restore Pere Marquette to the prestigious destination lodge that it once was.

  Very nice place to visit and relax.

  This lodge offers many packages during the weeks and the pricing is very affordable. It is a great place to stay and if in a group a very nice area to sit and visit or play cards or whatever. Try it out someday. A very relaxing atmosphere.

  Poor service. poor cleanliness, restaurant poorly staffed

  After many past stays we were badly disappointed on this stay. Dirty room, no toilet paper or soap upon arriving, poor service at the restaurant. Since Best Western has taken over management of the lodge, it has deteriorated as a great getaway place.

  Rollercoaster of Emotions

  We knew when booking that this trip was going to be a gamble (hotel in the middle of Grafton?) but we liked the rustic historical look and wanted a little getaway. We usually stay at 4/5 star resorts so I knew our standards were going to be hard to match here. Upon getting to our room (in the old wing) we found the hallway under major disrepair with the panels off and insulation exposed, the room had cracks all over and touchup paint that did not match, waterlogged furniture (someone even had written DIE on the nightstand). But clean. My husband was appalled and my trip booking reputation was then at stake. We did have a river view, that was nice. I decided we were going to salvage the trip by utilizing the pool at least. Nice, big, warm pool. We saw a lot of families just like us. We felt more comfortable and wondered if everyone else was as horrified by their room conditions? In talking to other families throughout the night, they were all fine with their rooms. Ok, it's part of the experience. We ate at the restaurant for dinner and kids asked to go back for breakfast. We relaxed in the Lodge in the evening. The bartender was great in the winery, reasonably priced drinks and food in lodge. The beds were comfortable. Our kids loved the place and are already asking to go back. So, that's a win in our book. We might even come back and stay in a cabin.
