This place is heaven on earth. If youre looking for a weekend haven from daily life or just a beautiful place to stay, its both. The staff is excellent! Immaculate and beautifully decorated with views of the sound and town that take your breath away. My favorite place!

    Had to cancel, no refund

Booked a room, then COVID hit, canceled per their policy, they agreed to refund the $600, but have never received the refund. Multiple calls and emails later, still nothing, they keep saying they have tried to refund but refund fails to go through. Very dishonest and unprofessional.

    Wonderful getaway week

Its been 2 months since our stay and we cant stop talking about what a lovely time we had! Our suite at the Burris House Inn was generously proportioned, thoughtfully appointed, comfortable and quiet. The location is just right for relaxing sunrise and sunset views (complete with a Blue Herron sentinel), short walks to town, and exploring Roanoke Island by complimentary bicycle. Thank you Innkeepers Tammy and Vicki and Housekeeper Miss Judy for your warm hospitality that made us feel not just like guests, but like family.

Not cleaned & sanitized, not COVID safe

It was our first trip to OBX. I found the Burrus House Inn by emailing places to help me find what I was looking for. I received an email back from Sarah telling me about the inn and offering, what I thought, a good price. I was super excited when I saw the pictures on the website. Beware of the pictures posted. After arriving & looking more in detail this is what I found. We stayed in Richard Orlando, room 6, and I posted pictures below. Rms 1 & 4 are in main pics Rms 7 & 5 are the same pics in viewing the room but 5 can be seen when booking Rms 6, 10, 11, & 12 have no pics Sarah referred me to her partner Vicki if I was interested in booking. When I called Vicki she was helpful in answering any & all of my questions. The day we were supposed to arrive in OBX they were expecting a hurricane. Vicki kept us informed & allowed us to push our reservations back a day. We were appreciative of this. When we arrived we were greeted by Tammy, a friend filling in for Vicki while she healed, & Judy, Tammy's mother & housekeeper. Both were friendly. Once we started unloading our car & unpacking, we discovered the room was filled with someone's clothes & personal items. We told Tammy & Judy and asked if everything could be removed. We did not want to be accused of something missing. We found out it was the room Vicki stays in during the off season. Apparently there was miscommunication about the items being removed. We felt as the room was only vacated for the length of our stay. Tammy & Judy claimed others stayed in the room before us & said nothing. That night I started examining the room closer and this is what I found. In the bedroom there was an outlet coming out of wall*, there was trash & single socks behind main dresser*, and more single socks in the corner by the desk*. While sitting in bed you could smell poop. I think it was from the neighboring room's bathroom. In the bathroom the light above shower was falling out of ceiling*, the mirror had water spots all over it*, one of the window covers in bathroom didn't work properly, and the sink took a long time to drain. The tub appeared to be dirty but when I said something, I was told the tubs are stained from people not washing their toner off beforehand. When my husband & I attempted to use the jets it was definitely not clean. They need to run cleaner through the jets between stays. The room had no plush robes. One item I love to have while on vacation. In the living area/kitchenette the TV stand & blinds were DUSTY and the blinds did not work fully. There was no toaster or Keurig coffee maker as listed on the website*, also no ice bucket*. I was told by Tammy & Judy that no rooms had toasters but when they showed us their favorite vacant room before we left it had a toaster. The refrigerator STUNK & you were not able to use the freezer area due to items in the freezer surrounded by freezer frost*. This, this was the deal breaker for me. I was counting on the use of the fridge & freezer. There was no hand sanitizer to be found in the room as described in the COVID-19 updates on the website*. Other items were the private entrance door had a shady door handle and there was a plastic tub outside on the private balcony to catch water coming off the roof. The room was not kept as the other rooms pictured on their website. It definitely was NOT cleaned & sanitized. I found this unacceptable for the world battling a pandemic virus. I felt like we were put in Cinderella's room while the stepsisters got the much nicer rooms. No wonder why we received a good price on the room. When Tammy & Judy arrived the next morning I told them I needed a different refrigerator. Tammy called Vicki to let her know & I was told it wasn't possible. So I brought up the other issues with the room. That solved the problem real quick. We settled on Judy would defrost & bleach the fridge while we were at the beach for the day. I was able to keep our food in the community fridge. I still ended up buying baking soda for the smell. All the other items above that were taken care of are marked with an asterisk (*). Tammy said Vicki was going to give us a night stay back but that never happened. I didn't expect it. I just wanted to same treatment as the other rooms. I felt bad for what Tammy had to take care of while filling in for her friend. She told me she did it for no pay. I hope she was compensated in some way. Tammy & Judy were VERY friendly and helpful during our stay. We gave them both a tip before we left. I wish we had more to give. I was going to give them the money if we got a night stay back. Richard Orlando did have some perks. It is a corner suite and is LARGE. There was cable television in the bedroom & living area. There are two balconies, one being private. To access the private entrance you have to walk awkwardly past two other rooms. It has a good view of the sound. We never used the kayaks, paddle boards, or bikes. I didn't see any hammocks or hammock swings as stated on the website but they may have been put away due to the hurricane. The website says there is a continental breakfast from 8a-10a but there were days "breakfast" wasn't there until almost 10a. It was mostly an assortment of pastries. Tammy & Judy would bring ham & cheese, spinach & feta, and chocolate croissants from a local restaurant, Front Porch Cafe. There is no one available after hours. We never did meet Vicki or Sarah. I think if there was better attention to details the Burrus House Inn could be a really nice place. Overall, we tried not to let the bad start ruin our stay. If we were to visit OBX again we would consider staying again.

My favorite place to stay in OBX

The Burrus house is very special to me - its where I stay EVERY time I visit OBX. I have had solo trips and trips with my husband. Everything has been delightful with each stay! Vicky is an exceptional host of the Inn and is incredibly helpful and kind. She stocks the inn with a delicious breakfast bar with local baked goods each morning. Theres a community fridge with beverages available, tea and coffee- kurigs in every room accompanied by darling mugs. There are paddle boards available, bikes (with baskets) available, an AMAZING private outdoor shower, and porches/balconys with each suite. It is a beautiful getaway & a quiet, cozy place to stay. I always feel so rejuvenated and pampered after I visit. The location is ideal! Close to everything one might need on a beach vacation. It is always clean and safe. Every time I visit I never want to leave! I cant wait to go back!! Its such a charming place and the views (no matter which room you stay in) are absolutely breathtaking. Marsh, ocean, islands, fishermen, boats going by.... the Burrus House is good for my soul!!! Ill be back several times this summer no doubt. I hear they have been updating things over the winter and I cant wait to see all the new fixings!
