    We felt ripped off...

We stayed shortly after this property reopened at the end of May and were hugely disappointed. Service, from prior telephone and e-mail communication, to on-site reception staff was not on par with a Relais & Châteaux property. Not very professional or helpful at all, close to zero information given, etc. As these were unusual times, we were able to look past this. However, the negatives just kept on piling up: In our (expensive) Riesling Suite we encountered: - a minibar snack menu but no snacks and no price list - a wine cabinet in to room but no pricing information - no in room dining menu - 1 complementary bottle of water (for 2 people for 2 nights!) - a radio that wasn't working The room wasn't serviced during our stay, which at the time was understandable. However, we felt like somebody 'half prepared' it before our arrival and never finished the job... Only after we called reception multiple times did we receive price lists and so on. Printing these in advance would have been simple enough for the hotel. The suite was not worth the high price tag in our opinion. The terrace is not private at all. The big positive was the comfortable bed, as well as the bathroom shower with integrated jets, mood lighting and music. The bathtub was also top notch. Dinner in the restaurant was very good, so was breakfast. No complaints here. On our second night we ordered room service as we wanted to make use of our spacious suite. This was probably one of the worst in-room dining experiences we ever had in a hotel... and bordering on inedible. No finesse, hardly any taste and the food looked like someone had thrown it on the plate. If you can ever be offended by food that is being served to you, this was the moment for us. Do go here for the restaurant and views over the vineyards. But stay somewhere else. Or at least not in the suites.

    Excellent value with German efficiency

We have stayed here in normal and current times. The majority of rooms are in an annex opposite the castle just a few steps away. The rooms are modern and well equipped some with terrace seating. Some of the towels and linens have seen better days but expect they will soon be renewed. The grounds are well maintained and the views over the vineyards and Rhine valley are exceptional. Dinner in the castle dining room is excellent traditional food. Breakfast is served as the usual vast buffet is not available during the current regulations. The more modern restaurant changes name and hands in the kitchen from time to time . The service however is constant. Personally I presently prefer the current unstarred offering without some of overprocessing. The menu is well presented and there is even a currywurst available if thats your hearts desire. The local wines are as good as Rhine Riesling gets and the estate overlooks Schloss Johannisberg The rooms whilst not ultra luxurious are excellent value by Relais and Chateau standards.

    Disappointed with the room

We had booked a room in the old part of this hotel which is charmingly situated amongst vineyards. DO NOT ACCEPT Room 6 unless you are happy to be kept awake by the kitchen staff until after 23.00 and woken up by noisy deliveries before 06.30. It is totally understandable that the kitchen staff need somewhere to chat and that deliveries need to be made but it is not acceptable to expect customers to pay a considerable amount to listen to the above. The downsides of this room should have been pointed out when the booking was made. On check out although our experience was told to the receptionist no adjustments were made to the room rate. Not good enough. Also it was pointed out to us when we checked in that we had not made a reservation for dinner and the restaurant was fully booked. Although that helpful receptionist managed to secure us a table, we felt that the necessity of booking a table for dinner should be made clear upon booking a room. Hot water slow to come through but good when it did, good bathroom- no bath- comfortable bed but plastic under sheet (again understandable) made the bed very hot; which did not aid the disturbed night.
