    A Little Gem!

The Makarska Riviera in Croatia - majestic mountains sweeping down to the blue Adriatic Sea. Nestled in between, practically on the beach, is Villa Kastalet in Tucepi. A small hotel (28 bedrooms) - a refreshing change from huge, multi-roomed hotels. Friendly staff, good food and wine - a wonderful holiday. We had a lovely room overlooking the sea and enjoyed being lulled to sleep at night. This hotel is well worth a visit. We stayed in the middle of May - not too hot and not too crowded. There is a lovely promenade by the side of the beach, tree lined with pine trees giving welcome shade - also plenty of benches to sit on and admire the view. The nearby resort of Makarska is also well worth a visit - lovely marina, shops and cafes.

    A PROMISE NOT FULFILLED

Our first visit to Croatia started well. Heavy rain as we scurried across the tarmac at Leeds Bradford airport but glorious sunshine as we arrived in Split, Croatia. As we were the only Saga clients making the trip to Tucepi we had the transfer of approx 90minutes all to ourselves down the coastal highway. There is no vehicular access direct to the hotel and so we were met by Sandi, the Saga representative and shown our hotel whilst the driver deposited our luggage at the sister hotel Bluesun Alga. To stroll on the promenade with the sea to our right and our illuminated stone built small "castle" hotel to our left was fantastic. We had chosen this hotel of only 28 rooms for its position by the the beach and its uniqueness of having once been a family home. We knew it wouldn't have all the facilities of its large modern well equipped associate hotel next door but we could utilise theirs. Built in a square with a large central open courtyard it seemed devine. Having paid extra for a seaview room I was greatly surprised when I opened the balcony doors to find a long balcony so narrow it was impossible to sit there to appreciate the view, you either stood or took what view you could sitting in the room. It was what I would call an a disappointing start to two weeks holiday. I had expected our meals to be taken in the grand courtyard as I felt the hotel would use the impressive surroundings to full measure, but no, we were shown into what I can only describe as a works canteen with polystyrene tiles on the ceiling and tableware and decorations which had no place in such a grand building. What a let down visually as it could and should have been so much better with the building available. We should have known that the food served in this depressing room would be of a similar standard. The same items served up everyday with the only excitement to decide what type of egg to eat. The staff were brilliant but I felt they had served this food to OLD folk for so long it no longer inspired them as well. Evening meals were no better with the main course being a choice and waiter served but if you didn't fancy potatoes with your meat or fish you found they just served you twice as much cabbage or green beans and I mean a lot. After a week of muttering to ourselves and leaving food on our plates we hoped the second week would start better but no because the menu just started repeating itself. We spoke to other guests who had visited before and they felt the hotel and food wasn't as good as previously and to be honest some felt we shouldn't complain because they liked it as it was. They knew what they would get! We took our complaints to Sandi who listened to us and other people who were unhappy with the hotel and the food and for what we had paid a substantial amount of money for. Our complaints were given to the Kastelet manager who listened to our concerns and appeared upset that we found the food repetitive and boring. The beef soup is on all the time he said because people like it and you have a second choice as well so there. He tried to say the menu changed each week but as my wife writes a diary we proved him wrong. The hotel has a well supported restaurant outside which is supplied from the kitchen providing our food so we asked why are we seeing wonderful looking dishes passing our tables to others and not for us.Needless to say we spent extra money dining out for the whole of the second week. Sandi was to forward our complaints and suggestions to Saga and on our last night a mysterious bottle of house wine and two glasses appeared in our room but with no compliments slip, how strange. I contacted Sandi and asked if it was for us, she said yes. It was from the manager as a thank you for our suggestions and that the hotel would be having a Gala Dinner on the day we went home. Was it to say goodbye to us?

    Super Holiday

Just returned from Croatia, and we were staying at this hotel.I think we had one of the best rooms .It was on the front, looking out to the sea. It was a very spacious room, with a balcony. Because we went on holiday with an organised group ,the food varied from bland ,same,to very good. The staff were amazing and always attentive. We chose to eat from the a la carte menu one lunchtime and it was much better, than our set menu. They had live music, four nights out of the seven and they were very entertaining. It was next to a much larger hotel,so other guests who where on that side of the hotel were not so lucky as us ,and complained of the constant noise til 11p.m. The air con didnt work,so we had to sleep with the windows open,as it was still warm at night. Overall though we had an enjoyable holiday here.

    Saga holiday

Nice mature hotel, we had sea view. Told a few weeks before departure we would be eating in adjacent hotel, Bluesun Alga https://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g608721-d302871-Reviews-Bluesun_Hotel_Alga-Tucepi_Split_Dalmatia_County_Dalmatia.html A very large concrete type hotel just behind. We had half board, breakfast ok coffee not fresh beans, juices water and powder, you pay extra for the real thing, evening meal everything COLD and overcooked, cold chips every day the wine red and white terrible, undrinkable ( but we had to) not up to Saga expectations. Tucepi is a nice place with walking along the coast 4 miles in either direction. Large busy pool in Alga. Usual towels over loungers if you get to the pool in the afternoon, the hotel management should sort that out.
