  Very Good Overall - good location, nicely presented, friendly service and value for money

  Stayed at Birchwood on two separate nights in April either side of walking the Rakiura Track on Stewart Island. Birchwood is well located. It is a 10 to 15 minute walk from the town centre, or just over $7NZ for a cab. If you are looking to eat in and want to buy food supplies there is a large Countdown (Woolworths in an Australian context) store directly across the road. We stayed in Room 5 on the first occasion and Room 4 on the second occasion. Both rooms have clearly been renovated in recent times and were smartly presented with a good quality kitchen area that has all you need to prepare meals. I am not sure whether all rooms have been upgraded yet - check. The beds in both rooms were comfortable. Birchwood is very much a conventional motel layout with rooms spread around a large car parking area. About half the rooms are up one flight of stairs so if mobility is an issue you might want to confirm a ground level unit. Rooms 4 and 5 were both on the ground level. There is good free WiFI. Fresh milk is provided for tea and coffee. There are no room safes. The owners were very friendly and helpful. They kindly stored a suitcase for us free of charge for the three days between our bookings. My recommendation of the two rooms we used would be Room 5. It was a King Bed Room and had a slightly nicer bathroom with a shower over the bath configuration. Room 4 contained a Queen Size bed and a single. Its bathroom only has a shower which has been set up for disabled access. So for a couple without mobility concerns Room 5 was nicer but Room 4 will clearly suit some peoples needs better. This is fairly much a standard motel complex but I think it has more street appeal than some of the other options nearby. I paid $140NZ one night and $149NZ the other. I thought this was good value for money. Recommended.

  Very Handy location

  Very comfy motel and roomy. Separate bedroom. Has a bath and shower. Plenty cups plates etc. Easy to find on main street into Invercargill. Supermarket right across the road .We had upstairs unit-no noise.

  Fantastic Find

  We arrived late to a warm room and a lovely room. Rooms are put together beautiful and the bed is comfortable. Will definitely stay here again and recommend to our friends. Perfectly positioned with supermarket across the road and a short walk to town.

  Really Impressed!

  On arrival we were really impressed with the room. Very modern decor, top quality finishes and overall a very pleasant unit. Catered for all our needs! Communication prior to arrival was a little spasmodic, but owners were away when we checked in and the person who was filling in for them, couldn't have been nicer. Super friendly, obliging and made us feel very welcome. Thanks heaps for a great stay - highly recommend.

  Main Street motel

  You get what you pay for. The room was spacious and warm, it was handy to everything and a typical motel. My only complaint is that the pillows smelt of cigarette, both of them. Not very pleasant.It was quiet and comfy otherwise
