Nice play to stayWe spend only one night there, but it gave us an opportunity for a good night sleep. The rooms may seem small when it comes to the western standard, but as for Japanese, they are rather average. Beds are comfortable, bathroom clean and with a toilettries, what more to wish for? Especially as the hotel is close to the JR station and has a supermarket and a 100yen store nearby. Nice breakfast, not as basic as in some of the budget hotels.

Typical Best Western in Japan, just average compare to other Japanese hotelsI was in the area for business and this Best Western is regarded as one of the better hotel. However, in my experience traveled all over Japan, this hotel is just average. As a Best Western Platinum Elite customer, this hotel always shows as not available on Best Western website, forcing me to book through 3rd party and forego my elite benefits. I booked a 2 night stay and needed to extend it, but the book site couldn't extend, so I booked a separate 1 night stay, totaling 3 consecutive nights. When I arrived, the hotel told me I would have to checkout and change room for my 3rd night, apparently they didn't have non-smoking room available for the 3rd night. Even on my arrival date, non-smoking room was showing available on a few hotel booking site. The non-smoking room was the usual small size for Japan but it was reasonably clean. Book sheet, towels are other items look in decent condition. However, the smoking room on my 3rd night was a nightmare. Beyond the intense smoke smell, everything in the room was stained by the smoke. Wallpaper had patches of discoloration and fixtures showed color change due to prolong exposure to smoke. I opened the windows, ran the air filter at max, and sprayed the room with deodorant for a better part of 6 hours but couldn't lessen the smell in the room. Smoking smell aside, I would not stay in a smoking room again because it was in a terrible condition. Bed sheets, towels and pajamas were all very worn and had loose threads and/or holes. There is a free coffee machine as welcome drink at the lobby. Oddly, it was turned off during breakfast but turned back on late evening. Not sure why you would want to drink coffee late at night unless you don't intent to sleep... The highlight of my stay were definitely the very kind staff and breakfast. Aside from the room issue, staff was accommodating and able to communicate with Google Translate. The breakfast has the usual Japanese staples with a rotation of the main protein item. Everything is in good quality and served in real dishes, which is much very nice...

Close to station but far from restaurants, hotel a bit old but OK to stayThe hotel is close to the JR train station, but it's on the eastern side of the station, which is quite deserted compare to the western side. All the restaurants are on the western side, so as any major attractions. However, there are several large groceries and pharmacy right besides the hotel. The walk from the train station is about 5 min. The only way to get to the western side of the station is to go thru the station itself. The walk between the station and the hotel is outdoor, thus can be quite chilly in winter. The hotel itself seems a bit dated but it's clean. The free breakfast buffet is reasonably good, with both western and Japanese food.

Not recommendedShort 5 minutes walk from Yonezawa station. But, not in front of the station entrance. You have to walk over the station using stairs or lifts. Nothing around the hotel within 2 minutes walk. The nearest convenience store is at the station itself. The room and the bed are clean, but very small. There is a relatively big spa kind of bath room, but its for men only. No luck for women. Limited selection for the breakfast buffet. I tried have some at 6:25am and rejected as it starts at 6:30am. I would look for a better one next time.

A Good Base for Car Based Local Area TouringNice to have a western bedroom again on our 4+ week Japan, self-drive road trip. Super clean room and larger in size than many we stayed at. Twin bed rooms are however usually bigger than a double bed room; in most Japanese hotels. The air con had no temp control but we turned it off and asked to have our locked window opened. This was quickly managed. Free on site car parking. A 5 minute flat walk to the railway station and then some city centre dining options. An ok breakfast but the space is very restricted. The Curry Restaurant option up one of the two main N-S streets (on the other side of the station) is highly recommended. Yonezawa is a good base for local area, hire car touring. Lots of autumn colour on the rural mountain roads north and south, in early November.
