    Love this hotel!!!

We stayed for 2 nights (21-23 July) as part of a 9 day Leger coach trip. From the moment we arrived we loved everything about this hotel. We had a lovely, spotlessly clean room. OK so it took a while to unlock the door, the décor was a little dated and the floor boards creaked etc. but it all added to the charm of this very traditional hotel. The staff were wonderful and made us feel at home. The food was delicious and served by friendly, happy staff. We enjoyed the friendly ambiance of the hotel. We slept really well and woke feeling refreshed and ready to take on the day. It was rather lovely to be woken up by the church bells at 7am! We would have liked to stay longer, but have wonderful memories that will last forever! Highly recommend this hotel.

    Amazing Hotel and Restaurant

We had a delightful time in this hotel and enjoyed a great meal in the restaurant. Parts of the hotel are 600 years old. This Bavarian town has amazing narrow streets, tall colorful homes, and a magnetic quality.

Very Pretty and Traditional German Hotel

Myself and my father stayed at this hotel for 3 nights, from the 26th - 29th July 2019 with Leger Coach Holidays to see the Formula 1 German Grand Prix. I personally dont think Leger could have picked a better location for us to stay while on our long weekend in Germany. The views from our hotel room window were simply marvellous, and is a perfect example of picture-perfect Germany with beautiful views overlooking the River Rhine, and the rest of Assmannshausen. The hotel was very quiet, meaning no disturbances, and the food in the restaurant is very much the sort of stuff that you would expect to see on a menu in Germany, giving you the full experience of German culture and what they have to offer. As we were out all day watching races in Hockenheim, we never really got the opportunity to make use of the facilities at the hotel, but the hotel does have a massage spa and a bar that you can use in between activities, and during the evening, and is also a short walk away from the local vineyards and nearby Rüdesheim. Overall, we wouldnt hesitate to stay here again at all. So, if youre ever in the Rhine area of Germany, and want a traditional, yet beautiful place to stay, Bergs Alte Bauernschaenke Hotel is for you.

Is it's age being used as an excuse for not modernising?

Stayed 4 nights in mid-August with a Great Railway Journeys group, during the coronavirus period. Good Points: Very picturesque hotel; spotlessly clean; huge bedroom and bathroom; bus stop right outside; short walk to railway station, and not much further to the river, for boat trips; chairlift almost outside the door, butchers shop a few yards away sells cold drinks for your day trip. Excellent choice of hot and cold breakfast dishes; somewhat restricted choice for evening meals, but always beautifully presented, and seemingly typically German recipes. Less good points: No spare electric sockets; we had to unplug table lamps to use our phone chargers. It was very hot and humid during our stay. There is no aircon or fan in the room the place is around 600 years old, after all - so we needed to leave the bedroom and bathroom windows wide open 24/7 for what tiny bit of ventilation that provided, but even doing that, we were still soaked in sweat all night trying to sleep. Note the trying to sleep! The very nearby railway line is a main freight and passenger line, so there are incredibly noisy freight trains rolling through every few minutes throughout the night; plus either the first bus of the day, or a noisy delivery truck, passed beneath our window at 6.30 each morning, followed by the church bells starting at 7 with 11 chimes (4 for on-the-hour, plus 7 for the oclock), then every 15 mins up till 8am, when it chimes 4 times for the hour, then 8 times for the oclock, then an unbelievable 90 further chimes yes NINETY!! making a total of 102 chimes, right outside our bedroom window, and theyre not quiet ones either! Plus, because the hotel is on a hill, the engine of every passing vehicle is working hard thus loud day and night. Needless-to-say, we got very little sleep during our stay. Our bathroom (Room 115, Top floor) must have been furthest from the hot water tank, as it took almost ten minutes in the morning, with the shower running, for the water to come through hot enough. Also, the beds are just very thin mattresses, with a sheet over them, on top of a solid base; but the sheets dont wrap far enough around the mattress, so the two separate as you turn over in bed, and that also makes them slide about on the base, so the mattress ends up hanging over the edge by about 3am! And the pillows are weird; unlike normal ones, where the pillow slides in through the side of the pillow case, and where the pillow itself is pretty rectangular, these are very lumpy, almost square, and fit in through the long edge of the pillow case, thus tend to slide out of the pillow case during the night, further exacerbating the difficulty of getting a decent nights sleep. Due to the coronavirus situation, we didnt get any maid service during our stay, except for clean towels on day two, so we had to make our own beds each day. Conclusion: The hotel was arranged for us by Great Railway Journeys, but if we ever visited the area again, we would stay somewhere else, with modern facilities, although we'd be happy to eat here again.
