friendly spacious hotelVery frienly staff, family feeling, nice wellness area and beautiful surroundings. We stayed for 3 days, enjoyed the hotelroom, the games room and the wellness facilities. Also very nice to make walks in the hills!! The restaurant has a very nice staff and reasonable food.

Spacious hotel on top of a mountainThe hotel is really big which works fine if you have plenty of guests. On the night I was staying there were not really enough guests to fill the spacious public areas. My room too was really big which always feels nice when you have to unpack your things or in my case dry your things out after a very rainy day. The receptionists were more than friendly and efficient. The waiters too worked hard although they did not radiate real joi de vivre. The food was fine but not top class. For instance , the Kuchen I had was rather mediocre and the dinner was a bit on the salty and heavy side (too much cream in the soup,,which obliterated the taste of the water-cress) . But then I have come across that more often on this German holiday . It was quite nice that the owner came to enquire how everything was and he seemed really interested. A takeaway lunch was part of my arrangement and it was varied and ample.

Excellent locationThe Hotel offers an excellent stay with great surroundings and near the Winterberg ski slopes. Rooms are comfortable. Food and drinks affordable and staff is kind. Wellness area is acceptable - mind you, if you get at room in the guesthouse/annex building - wifi may not be 100%.

Good start for HikesThe hotel is not easily reachable by public transport, the best thing to do is to call the hotel and see if they can pick you up from Winterberg station. The main house is very old fashioned, reminds a bit of a hunting lodge, with animal themes, wide stairs (although there was a lift) wooden panels and confusing corridors. The room was also not newly refurbished, had a Mountain View room with a view of the forest ???!!!! . The balcony was not so inviting as it was part of the roof of another part of the building and there was only a metal chair (no cushioning available) as furniture. The bathroom was fine. There is no radio, and the TV only has about 5 channels, not that you need it much. The food was very good and all the staff were pleasantly polite. The location is rather middle of nowhere which invites you to hike and explore the region. The staff are helpful and provide maps and there are leaflets of pre-worked out routes you can take. I was informed that the local bus doesn't stop there anymore (only runs 3 times a day and has to be pre-booked anyway !) The spa area was a good size, pool, infra-red, sauna, foot baths, steam baths - all there. The massage woman was brilliant - got rid of my strained muscle back pain - she enjoys her job, worth booking.

Hazards on the territoryThey have AN ELECTRIC FENCE right between the restaurant and the rooms entrance. My dog managed to get tangled there. The fence is COMPLETELY UNMARKED, to me it looked like protection of a newly made lawn. It looks like anything, but not something that has high voltage. It is made to protect sheep. No idea why they need sheep in the hotel, why there is no wooden fence, hiding the electric fence or any single sign there is voltage. My dog got hurt, while enjoying his time on a walk. He got tangled, as it is a double fence, ran through it and got tangled again. It was Sunday evening, we planned to stay for one more day, but left to go to a vet. Our vet said he had some muscle injury, had to get an injection and now will have to restrain dogs activity for a couple of days. The hotel management reaction was like this is not a big deal, they could not even provide the specifications of the voltage going through the fence. What if a kid runs there? Would they also not do anything about that? Apart from that situation, the hotel is extremely dated, no amenities in the room, not even facial tissues, no room service, miserable selection on the breakfast with only warm things being bacon and eggs, definitely stayed in a better 4* in Germany for the price they charge.
