    Great Stay

Beautiful B&B and helpful hosts. Room, though small, was well equipped and new with comfortable beds and big ensuite. Hosts were most helpful with information about area, very hospitable. Though late, host drove us to a music recital and dinner. The breakfast was good and hosts spoke English. Highly recommended.

    Outstanding B&B; highly recommended

My family and I have been to many B&Bs and I have to say this has been the best one we've stayed at for several reasons. 1. Clean- the entire B&B was extremely well kept by the owners. 2. Welcoming and Friendly- the owners were extremely welcoming and accommodating. We were unable to get directly to the B&B via our navi, however, when we called , they were able to meet us about a mile away from the property and we followed them back. When we got to the place, the first thing my wife and I noticed was the extremely friendly and welcoming place. While checking in, we were served coffee and tea. We were there New Year's Eve and the owners served the traditional buckwheat noodles, which were delicious! After the dinner, they took us to the local shrine to experience what the locals do for the New Years. This in itself was an awesome experience. 3. Great location- the B&B is closely located to the center of Karuizawa, but gave the look as being out in the woods. It snowed the time we were there so it was an awesome experience waking up and seeing the snow covered surroundings right from the deck of your room. 4. Food. We enjoyed the special soba dinner along with a Japanese traditional New Years breakfast on New Years day. Overall, I would highly recommend this B&B if you are heading to Kaurizawa. The combination of the location, distance to the station(short cab ride), natural surroundings, onsens and outstanding owners makes this an ideal spot for families to lodge at. The B&B only has three rooms, so reserve now, you won't regret your stay.

    Restful Retreat

Driving to Karuizawa from an uncomfortably hot and humid Tokyo, it was refreshing to get into the mountains. The main selling point of a place like the Hyochoan is the greenery that completely surrounds the house, and it was intelligent of the owners to take advantage of this with wrap-around decking on two sides and large picture windows. Each of the three small rooms has its own veranda so that one can feel as though one is sitting outdoors. Since there are very tall trees around the edge of the property, the house is effectively in a forest location, and the quiet stillness creates just the right atmosphere for a restful break from the city. And Karuizawa really is much cooler than Tokyo. My only gripe is that they could have done more with the garden. I presume they are after a 'natural' effect but even so, additional planting around the tiny pond and a bit of weeding wouldn't go amiss. - Everything else already said by other reviewers is true: the retired couple and their son are extremely friendly and hospitable; the rooms are equipped with free wifi, tv, music player, fridge and good air conditioning; the breakfast was of superior quality, and of special note was the delicious home-made rhubarb jam. The lady of the house avoids all chemical additives in making her own food, and I noticed that she had a healthy attitude towards salt and sugar. Dinner is not included, but it's a short walk down the hill to a small group of shops and restaurants offering a good choice, though none of it very cheap. The Hyochoan is located down a country lane away from the main road. The turning is opposite another large place called the 'Art Hotel Villa 11', and there is a small sign with the Japanese characters for 'Hyochoan' pointing to the turn-off.

    Enjoy our stay

We stayed 2 nights in Hyochoan. Both Japanese and Western breakfasts were very good. Rooms are very clean and tidy. The hosts were very friendly and helpful. They gave us information about kids activities in the area and made reservations for us. They gave us onsen discount coupons too. We enjoy our stay so much and look forward to come back again.

    Great hospitality

This B&B is a hidden gem! The building is very nice and modern and the rooms are large with decks and high tech bathrooms. We had fantastic Japanese breakfast every morning (western is also available). The B&B is in a wooded area and walkable to Hoshino Onsen and the shopping/restaurant area. It is not close to the train station but they offer free shuttle service. The best part about this B&B are the owners. They are wonderful and you feel taken care of and feel like youre a part of their family. They were very helpful and kind.
