  Ideal for beach lovers.

  The Baia Paraelios is a complex of hillside chalets leading down to its own private beach. It boasts two swimming pools, a large restaurant area, bar area, and sports and entertainment facilities. The complex laid out in a Mediterranean garden of cycads, prickly pears, cacti, palms and other trees and plants, which all compliment the beautiful beach and view over the crystal clear Tyrrhenian sea. The purpose of the Baia Paraelios can be summed up quite easily; you spend most of your day on the beach, and at set times, go the the restaurant for your meals. In the evening you go to the baby dancing and the show. It's a place to enjoy the beach and relax. The Beach is separated into three sections and is bigger and longer than my photo reveals. The sand is quite coarse but the sea is so beautifully clear! You are assigned a beach umbrella and two sun lounges for the length of your stay, so there is no battle for possession. Breakfast, luncheon and dinner are provided as part of the package. For luncheon and dinner you have your own table for the time of your stay. Breakfast is the normal continental fare of sliced cheese, ham, bread rolls, instant coffee, breakfast cereal, yoghurt etc, and you find whatever table is free. It was usually a hectic affair. Luncheon and dinner were more dignified and of a buffet style. Plenty of fruit and salad vegetables are provided with a starter of two types of pasta and a main course of seafood or meat. If you have traditional English tastes, you might find the food a little off-putting. Whole tuna appears to be a staple and squid and even baby octopus were one day's main dishes. Even the one time they had roast beef it was cooked 'very rare'. Chips were offered once and were rationed to one serving. Curiously pizza was not on the menu. Luncheon and dinner were quite healthy and far above usual English fare. This may all sound good but there are a few problems. The first one is that the Baia Paraelios appears to be there mainly for Italians and has not quite woken up to the fact that it gets a few foreigners. We appeared to be the only English people during our stay and we were only aware of one German couple and a couple of Scandinavian families. The staff, although friendly, spoke little English, with only one of the entertainment staff being conversant. If you are thinking of staying at the Baia Paraelios you will need to consider if you are happy with this situation. Another problem is that the resort is on a very steep hill and there are many steps. If you have mobility problems, even walking with difficulty, you will find this resort impossible. Provision for wheelchairs falls well below English standards. Another problem, the one that spoiled if for us, was getting out and about. Unless you have a car you will find getting out to see the surrounding towns and sites quite problematic. The problem is that all you will always be offered an expensive taxi. A return journey to Tropea, which is only a 5 minute car journey away will cost you 20. I do not like to say this but I think there is a conspiracy concerning taxis. This is because there is a bus service which stops 500 metres to the left of the main entrance to the Baia Paraelios and the fare is 1 to Tropea. However the existence of this bus service is kept secret by the Paraelios staff and time-tables are not available. We only found out about the buses through the German couple, who had managed to get hold of a bus timetable and used the bus to get about. To be fair it is not just a Baia Paraelios problem, the whole taxi system appears to be run on a commission basis, so everyone is eager to offer you a taxi. To me it was this which spoilt an otherwise perfectly good holiday. It meant we did not see much of the surrounding area. And neither does the Baia Paraelios have any organised tourist bus trips on offer to visit the local area.

  Muy bonito pero jolín con los taxis

  Bia Paraelios es muy bonito. Es un complejo parecido a un Butlins pijo pero mucho más bonito. Nos alojamos en una habitación con vistas al mar, en la zona del parque. Tenía una mesita y sillas exteriores. Ubicado en una colina que da al mar. El marco era precioso. Estaba ubicado en un jardín mediterráneo. Había dos piscinas con hamacas y sombrillas. La pensión completa consistía en comida italiana fresca en abundancia, presentada en un bufet. Otras cosas como el café se pagaban recargando una tarjeta. La comida se servía con agua y vino. La habitación era sencilla y se limpiaba cada día. El nivel era bueno. La playa estaba limpia y tenía unas preciosas aguas azules. Las vistas eran bonitas. El lugar está ubicado en una pendiente, así que si no estás demasiado en forma o tienes que empujar una silla de ruedas o carritos y tienes una habitación o chalé en la pendiente quizá no sea el lugar más indicado para ti. Yo tengo artritis, pero podía llegar. Tenía que ir despacito para llegar arriba. Para salir: Hay un autobús cinco veces al día en cada sentido. Te dirán que no lo hay y que solo hay taxis. No hay parada de autobús, te dirán que necesitas un taxi. Hay un autobús. Tienes que pararlo indicándoselo con el brazo justo al lado del bar de carretera. Está a 500 metros. Ellos te dirán que no hay parada de autobús. Los horarios pueden conseguirse en TROPEA (hay una playa estupenda allí). El servicio de taxi es muy bueno también. También se puede coger el tren el Parghelia, no esta lejos. Pero si optas por bus o tren te dirán que solo puedes ir en taxi... ¿Será por las comisiones? Además tienes que llevar las maletas arriba y abajo por la cuesta, pero hay un minibús que sale unas cuantas veces al día en ambos sentidos. Lo pasamos muy bien. Las habitaciones tenían aire acondicionado. Nos encantaron los bailes de niños y los espectáculos.
