    Okay for the Swimming Pool

This was once one of the best hotels in Udon Thani. A decade ago you'd have been hard pressed to find better and even in 2010 it was very good. Udon Thani has however since undergone rapid development and there is much more to do and see here. The city area is now more concentrated to near Central Plaza and UDTown. A few years ago the latter, which is a large outdoor shopping mall didn't exist and since it has, Central Plaza has become a huge shopping mall having an $88 million USD upgrade a few year back. This is the area most visiting Udon Thani city would want to stay. Unless here for adult activities in which case there are hotels on Soi Sampantanit which is nicknamed Soi Fai Deng (Thai for: Red Light Road). This all is the first issue with Ban Chiang Hotel is it is no longer near much of what Udon Thani offers. Meanwhile they have let this once beautiful property become worn down. I visited here yesterday and while I'm not sure if it was just renovations the Karaoke place that was once there was closed. It did look like it was maybe undergoing renovations. The final thing left that might make this hotel worth staying is the swimming pool. The actual pool itself is kept clean as far as water treatment is concerned. The reason why is this is where many Thai families take their children here for swimming lessons. If you ever get to observe this it is almost sad to see as they are all quite militant about it, and some of the smallest kids cry but do learn to become serious swimmers. I'm not talking only how to swim, but rather swimming fast, with proper stroke, learning various styles. Even some kids that look 3-4 years old are zipping across the pool coming up for breath and going through other actives. You'll also notice the type of guests using it in that being an adult there as children leave the pool area almost all will wai you as per Thai customs. All that besides the point. The pool is okay and while not massive is fairly large. The area surrounding it isn't the best, as there are not too many lounge chairs and the plastic grills that handle the overflow are a bit aged, but the actual inside the pool for swimming is good. There are also changing rooms, toilets and an outdoor shower right at the pool. If staying here for the pool, this is most ideal during hours children are in school. The reason why is they have these swimming lessons going on other times, and also anyone can come use the pool for a fee of 60 baht for adults, 40 baht for children and the bulk using it are under one of those two as opposed to being hotel guests. I swam here yesterday and did enjoy it, just the property has now become aged. All would be fine if the pricing for staying in the hotel reflected the no longer too ideal location, and the hotels condition. However this is most often priced similar to some of the best hotels in Udon Thani and for that price one can do much better.

We went to marathon event in the city town. Hotel location is just walking distance to nearby 2 parks and so the Saturday market with lots of street food. Breakfast is quite good but limit of choice of Thai food. Staff are nice and friendly

    Ban Chiang world heritage centre

I love Ban Chiang it is about 7 miles from Ban Nong Mek in Nong Han, the village itself is beautiful with a small lake where you can feed the fish, there are plenty of local craft shops and a small Market, there is also an evening Bazaar maybe twice a week, nearby is a stunning Temple with a walled lake where if you are very lucky you can see a real live Alligator, as with all small Thai villages the people are friendly and helpful and many a night I have spent drinking with them and singing "Karaoke", I will be back again at the end of August, if anyone wants info on this area feel free to PM me

    Ban Chiang.

Ban Chiang World Heritage site near Udon Thani is a well preserved archaeological site, dating back some 5,000 years. Famously visited by the King in 1972, great strides were made to develop and enlarge the site and its scope, into what is now a major site, which is definitely worth visiting.

    Great hotel food

I've been here at Centara hotel for almost 3 weeks and have eaten at the resident restaurant there a few times. While the food is more expensive than other outdoor venues it's still good quality and set in a nice environment. I've had Thai omelette, Pad Thai, sashimi salmon in spicy sauce and satay chicken skewers. All were very good quality with prices ranging from 150 baht to 320 baht for sashimi salmon. If your staying here and feeling lazy then this is a good place to eat. After eating you can move over to the lounge area and enjoy drinks listening to local entertainers playing mostly romantic music. The smoothies are very nice as is the coffee.
