Nice hotel but quite expensiveWe stayed two nights in the western style room. It did not have the lake view as promised, instead we could see the parking lot from our room. The room itself was clean and tidy. Free fresh green tea is provided, although there was no water cooler, only hot water available. The bathroom was chilly and the water temperature of the shower was a bit low. The staff did not speak English at all and the breakfast was ridiculously expensive (27000 yen pp). The private onsen is accessible free of charge to hotel guests and it is amazing. The view is great (lake view) and the baths are very nice. I went in twice and I had the sauna, indoor baths and outdoor bath all for myself. I would recommend going to this onsen.

Edge of town tranquil lake location was nice place to unwindI selected a western room since I was visiting for one night for hiking and tour of springs. As other travelers have noted these rooms are small and do not have a view, but everything else was comfortable/nice. As far as I could determine there is no restaurant per se, so if food is not brought to the room is served in some sort of meeting room. I wanted to eat out anyway, but Unzen has limited options, however even with the language barrier a person at the front desk found a small bar that was open and drove me to it. If the stay is for the onsen experience select the Japanese room and eat in room.

Not bad. But could be betterIt's clear that this property had it's Golden Years and several awards during the 90s and the latest in the mid 2000s. Now the hotel feels aged and lacks charm. It's location it's prime been right at the lake with stunning views from most of it's rooms. Try to get get rooms higher than the 2nd floor and also high numbers. Otherwise you won't be getting unobstructed views to the lake, which would be a shame. Rooms are really spacious for Japanese standards and it's clean. The bathroom needs attention. Feels like the 80s. The safe box is straight out of a sci-fi movie and takes a little fiddling but it works. Food is good. Although we were served in a ball room set as a dining room. Service is not bad. We had the same people serving us morning and night so I'm guessing these are people who live in the area, which is quite remote. English is poor but they give it a honest try.

Make sure you tell them any room except 215 and 216Hotel a bit tired but all the tatami rooms faces the lake. Rooms 215 and 216 are the exceptions. These are the only 2 western rooms. Small and cramp and are stuck right behind. If you read some of earlier comments, others been stuck in these small rooms as well. Do make a point to the hotel you do not want those rooms Apart from this, the staffs are wonderful. And both dinner and breakfast The public bath is clean and modern.
