Poor room, not as advertised, Extremely Disappointing

We booked a classic gorge view room well in advance and I even phoned to check the room had a view and a queen sized bed as advertised on the website, I was assured yes it did. On arrival we were given a room overlooking the street and on stating that we had booked a gorge view room we were advised that wed been upgraded, strange that we were upgraded to a street view room when we had booked a gorge view, we wanted a view and so I said wed stick with the classic roomWe had booked. Off we went to our gorge view room described on the website as spacious with a queen bed ........ not sure who described it as spacious or measured the bed! A double bed is what we had in what can only be described as a very cosy room! I checked again if wed been allocated the right room to be told yes we had, that the room description on the website was incorrect, and there was nothing they could do unless we wanted to go back to the street view room As the hotel was full. A gesture of good Will was offered however no gesture will make up for not having what we had planned and booked. Very disappointed to say the least, celebrating a big anniversary in a poky, dark and dingy room with a bed smaller than what we have at home is not what we had planned! We stay away a lot but well go back to the Marriott or the Harbourside next time, both less expensive with far superior rooms. We are here on a DBB basis and the service in both the bar and restaurant was exceptional excellent friendly staff, the food however was mediocre, dry overcooked and tasteless cod, lamb ordered pink but arrived well done. Breakfast however was one of the best weve had. A very mixed bag and to be honest we would have overlooked the food issue if wed had the right room. The bathroom in the room was excellent, but of course you dont sleep in there so it did not make up for the room. EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED - do not advertise a spacious room with a queen bed if you dont have it ! We moved on the Stratford for two nights at the indigo, cheaper and by far superior.

    Unsatisfactory, disappointing and deceptive.

Potential customers need to be cautious when deciding to book this hotel. The marketing material and images do not reflect the actuality. My wife and I had booked a Classic Gorge View room and paid a premium for this choice, to discover on arrival that the view was in fact a vast expanse of flat roof with some trees in the background. It is my view that the company are responsible for allocating rooms that reflect the fee and specification selected. One invests confidence in these premium companies and dont expect to be told the morning after, we had other rooms! The room itself was dark but comfortable. We eat vegan food and the choice on the restraunt menu was soup, plant based burger and chips and sorbet. I would expect a hotel marketing itself as a premium brand to offer far more choice. The food served was nice. £6.00 to park our car on the hotel premises is questionable? The fire alarm went off at 4.30 am which meant ourselves and those guests who responded were stood outside in the rain with no explanation as to what was happening. Apparently a false alarm!

    Great visit, cozy and special

We had a great stay for our anniversary in early October. We booked one of the cheaper rooms, and it was small but perfectly formed. The hotel decor generally is dark, and it felt really cozy and premium. £6 for parking around the local area which is all permit based so I found this really reasonable and we managed to bag a spot right outside the hotel. Amazing views of the bridge. Covid-secure and felt very clean. Would highly recommend (and very surprised to read other recent reviews!)

Great stay in a nice hotel with lovely staff.

Stayed here for one night... Booked a deluxe balcony room with a view of the gorge , there was scaffolding up at the time and so the staff were extremely helpful and polite, and on my arrival at reception they informed me of this without prompting & offered for me to view alternative rooms of my choice if Id prefer. I was also given a complimentary late checkout and parking paid for so I was really quite happy as I appreciate buildings do need to be maintained. I wanted a balcony however, and could see through the scaffolding quite well to the Clifton bridge (which is stunning at night) & I could see the gorge, then to the left I could see Over Bristol, again, stunning at night. The room was generous in size, I really loved the quirky decor. The bathroom was lovely, shower was amazing! underfloor heating was a nice touch. I had a query with the room heating and the staff were very helpful, as they were throughout my stay including for breakfast which i chose to have in my room. (A simple bacon sandwhich and a pot of tea all very nice). The room was clean, the bed was enormous and so comfy! I left a small usb in the room and without any issue they are posting that back to me straight away. I was really happy with my stay here and felt very comfortable with all the current precautions put in place also. Thank you!

AVOID AVOID AVOID Catalogue of errors for £340 a night

So disappointed having stayed here several times already. Got engaged on the bridge, stayed there then and then before we went on our honeymoon. Then decided best place to go for our first anniversary. It was bad from check in long queue, no apology for wait, tried to charge me for breakfast that I had already paid for. Offer to take bags to room but refused as knew it would be another long wait. Room not ready so go to bar to enjoy the view as we had before. Wine served in chipped glass, went to pay and was told we could put bill on our room, only to then queue again. One customer decided to jump the queue and bypass us and three other couples waiting, obviously he was ok to do this as the lady on the desk served him straight away. While waiting in the queue bar staff comes running out of the bar waving his hands shouting are you checking out you haven't paid for your wine. My husband and I were so embarrassed and others waiting looked at us. If you are paying £340 for one night are you really not going to pay your bill? We got to our room Pol Roger not at all like it was, dirty dust flying in the air someone had made nasty marks by the bath. We had such a lovely stay in there previously it was just not to the same standard. The hotel said its due to Covid restrictions but you can't make that excuse for dust and marks on the wall. No bubble bath yet give you a bath in the room, we never do bubble bath the deputy manager told me, why have a bath then!!! In the night the fire alarm sounded for a long time, no apology at breakfast or checking out. Safety is important but as we only had one night an apology or explanation costs nothing. Breakfast tasted good but expected to use just one set of knives and forks for first your toast marmalade then expected to wipe them for your cooked breakfast, very poor. They put the small delivered cartons of milk on table, Covid can't be excuse for that jugs would be more Covid safe as they can be deep washed cartons have been touched by god knows how many people. No orange juice, really!!!! Some of the staff in dinning room very scruffy. They also let customers wear baseball hats at the table, very poor manners, no dress code. Then on check out they again tried to charge us again for breakfast and the customers on the next desk they were trying to charge them for a lunch they didn't have. As it was our first wedding anniversary it felt already ruined and I decided to email them when I got home as not to upset my husband further. The deputy manager replied saying he would wish to discuss this further with me and asked for a day time to call, I told him and waited for his call no call. He then emailed stating he had been sick, ok I thought perhaps the manager could have called. I then waited for his call, I had put in detail in my email all what was wrong and when he called being at least 2 weeks after our stay he hadn't even checked the mess in the Pol Roger room before he called me. He made several excuses, like we don't apologise for the fire alarm going off and we can't tell people not to wear hats, he would speak to bar man. I wasted my time on the phone to him as he had an answer for everything, but didnt recognise our wedding anniversary was ruined because of the poor service and conditions of the hotel, we would never get that back. if you spend £340 a night you expect great service, clean room and not every opportunity for them to add to your bill they will. The deputy manager offered me a discount when we stay again, I feel he should have offered a full refund or a free night stay, telling us if would be much better. What he offered was insulting when we had stayed 4 times already. The hotel must have had a management change as the staff were just not the same. 5 star price with 2 star service and a dirty room. One past customer said you would be better at Travel Lodge I think he's right. Shame such a beautiful looking hotel that we had such strong feelings for, has been allowed to be run down. Don't expect an amazing stay, if you do dare to complain you are on deaf ears. Wish I had read the other comments before our fourth stay but thought we were going to having an amazing stay, like previously. What a let down. I left my champagne glasses in the room, no shock didn't get a call to say I had left them, hope who has them enjoys them. I do not require a response from the manager, deputy manager had chance to make it up, he choose not to, just made excuses. We should have been offered a full refund for a catalogue of errors on our first wedding anniversary. Previously recommended this hotel to lots of my friends will be telling them to not go now. What should have been amazing was ruined by this hotel, thank god we went out of the hotel for dinner and had a lovely meal with great service and no chipped glasses.
