A lovely area to visit but very disappointing stay at Wisemans RetreatTravelled with friends for a two night stay at Wisemans Ferry and booked accommodation at Retreat at Wisemans. Very disappointing. While location is good and very central to this 'country' town, rooms were extremely dated and in need of a refresh - especially the bathrooms. While room toilets had been updated to dual flush, the toilet seats had yellowed in colour with age and needed replacing - not an overly expensive exercise, I would imagine, for the owners. When it came time to check out, 9.20 am Friday morning, there was no one in attendance at the office and when phone contact was made with Kyle (?) the Night Watchman we were told to take our keys back and lock them in our rooms. Not overly impressed as documentation stated that a $100 fee per key would be charged if lost or not returned to reception. Although this venue has a dining room no breakfast or other meals were available during our stay. The Bowlo across the road and local cafe/supermarket were good for meals.

A rough gem in need of polishingThe Retreat is a slightly run down resort in a magnificent location. I discovered that it is owned by absentee Chinese investors who have never visited and have starved the property of funds. That shows. I also learned that the property is on the market, so it's a huge opportunity for some smart investors IMHO. My 3 day visit was in a group booking of keen elderly golfers. The Resort has its own 9 hole course. It also has tennis courts, a volleyball court, a golf putting practice green, a swimming pool and adjacent bar and locations designed and well set up for wedding ceremonies. When our group visited, the tennis courts were unusable because they had sheets of water covering a good part of them, the volleyball court was decrepit and unusable and the practice green had been untended for so long that it was mostly usable as a grazing area for goats or sheep. The 9 hole golf course has an excellent, testing layout in a stunningly beautiful spot. It nestles in a bend of the Hawkesbury River. Imposing cliffs rise precipitously on the opposite side of the river. The course is flat but has lots of trees. It is a par 63 (if you play 18 holes). It's lack of length is counter-balanced by the majority of holes having pronounced dog-legs. So short par 4s are unreachable in 1 even by A grade players. Many fairways require accurate tee shots through fairly narrow arches formed by large trees. Unfortunately the course has been poorly maintained. Greens are weed infested messes, so putting is a lottery. Bunkers are in poor condition. There were no rakes, not that there was much sand left to rake anyway. Our golfing group had fun anyway on this course, but that's because our priority is fun and companionship. Serious golfers will enjoy the testing layout but would, I believe, be caustic about the condition of greens and bunkers. The resort itself is fair to average. Rooms are large, comfortable, well fitted out though a little tired. I slept well in a very comfortable bed. There was plentiful hot water with good pressure, even though the resort uses tank water. The en suite bathroom was roomy, clean and well designed. There is a small kitchenette in each room with frig and electric kettle. Like most properties in Australia, tea, coffee, sugar and milk are supplied in the rooms, as are soaps and shampoos in the bathrooms. The Resort provides comfortable, clean accommodation. Lighting in my room could have been better. The kitchenette, especially, needed a light. TV and A/C were provided and worked well. Free wifi is provided. That's a plus because mobile phone coverage at Wisemans Ferry can be spotty. The location is at water level in a steep, fairly narrow valley. Because of COVID-19, the Resort's restaurant (Riverside) is closed. I was in a group booking, so we were able to have breakfast provided. Choice was limited, quality was mediocre and it was fully priced for what was provided. The Resort appeared to be running on a skeleton staff. So let me give them kudos. The few that served us were excellent. They went well out of their way to make our group stay comfortable and enjoyable. The Resort may be run down but the remaining staff seem to be working small miracles to keep the place operating.

Extremely run downI'm sure this place would have been very nice once, but unfortunately it has been let go when most properties have taken the time during covid shutdown to do maintenance this place has done the opposite, we almost had to pull out weeds to get to our room. The gardens are so overgrown and rundown it is a disgrace. The rooms are old with chipped paint on Verandahs and worn carpet and broken doors in room. The pool was closed but not because of covid, because it apparently had a leak, tennis courts full of leaves and debris. But the room prices were still the same. Would I go back. Not until it has had some maintenance done.

Top LocationDespite being a little rundown The Retreat is a good place to stay. We spent two nights in a superior room overlooking the golf course and it was very quiet and peaceful. The good size room had a king size bed, two lounge chairs and a table. The bathroom was modern and it was all spotlessly clean. The only staff member we met was Mel at reception and she was excellent. She was friendly, happy to help and very efficient. The Retreat is in a great location, across the road from the bowling club and a short walk to the pub and supermarket.

Comfortable and friendlyWe arrived and booked in and the lady at the desk couldnt do more for us. She offered a late checkout & told us where to find the local walks. So helpful. The room was large , the bed so comfortable, great pillows. Theres coffee & tea and a little fridge. Birdlife all around. The only thing that could have made it better was new towels in the bathroom.
