Authentic as it getsThis is as good as you get, an authentic Japan hotel where you get genuine Japanese experience and its worth the effort. After a nice short train ride from Kodama up into the mountain town of Hakone you arrive at the station. We decided to walk to the hotel with our bags, no it wasnt a problem as long as you are fit or need some travel exercise. I suggest calling the hotel from the information desk at the station and ask for a pickup in their courtesy van, it is a lot easier. The service from the staff is exceptional and nothing is a problem as long as you like sleeping on the floor. It a great experience but sometimes a little different getting up out of bed as a senior citizen. The meals were included in our package and I love the amazing presented Japanese food and to put it bluntly my wife dislikes it as much. Needless to say she lost weight over the 3 day stay and I loved it. The so-called public baths in the hotel are very good and there was absolutely no one there when I went with my travelling buddy. Totally relaxing private and beautiful hot water baths inside and out. I even had to give bathing instructions to a new guest who wasnt to sure of the procedure, I am now a 3 day expert. The best way to walk to the town is down the hill passed the best stocked liquor store on a prominent corner their range of liquors are amazing particularly the mini sake barrels that made idea souvenirs, and you get to drink the sake when you get home. All and all a beautiful stay and I loved it and the travels up the mountains by bus station or train.

Mosquitos ruined this hotel for meI really like this ryokan and it wouldve been a very good stay except that they had a mosquito problem during my stay. This is surprising because it was already autumn and we made sure to keep the window screen closed, so Im not sure if its a lack of cleaning or just really bad luck. We stayed at the japanese style room. The first night wasnt bad (one or two mosquitos only) but the second night was TERRIBLEi killed 6 or 7 mosquitoes and didnt sleep very well with all the itching and mosquito hunting during the night. My right eye lid was also slightly swollen from an insect bite the next day. When i showed the staff all the mosquitoes i killed (gross but I had it as proof) and the swollen eyelid, they were properly apologetic but didnt bother sending anyone to investigate the issue. The hotel facilities are nice. I like the library and the breakfast was goodsmall portions but quite filling. I rented a private onsen for 3,300 yen and it was wonderful (too bad those mosquitos ruined the evening!) The public onsen is also nice. I went early in the morning and practically had the outdoor onsen to myself. The location is convenient and they have a private shuttle from 8-11am. Otherwise, its easily accessible from the popular bus k, bus stop 325.

Worst experience in HakoneThis is probably the worst hotel Ive ever stayed at and is unbelievable overpriced. This is would be fine if it was a $90USD budget hotel, but that is not how they price. Here is why: - The rooms smell TERRIBLE. A smell that reminded me of a New York City cab. Nothing seemed clean. - The beds are horrific. In any ryokan it is absolutely expected that you sleep on a mattress on the floor. These felt like they were 100 years old and the pillow provided was a small bean bag. I am still dealing with the resulting back pain. - The private Onsen had a beautiful setting but was not cleaned properly and full of hair. - No towels whatsoever. You have to request and then you get comically small ones of bad quality. - Restaurant food was sub par. Although the wait staff was very attentive, the food isnt great. This is probably expected given its a small town and hotel food is always meh. - They have no sense of courtesy to their guests. Even though the shuttle driver was just sitting there idle, they would not give us a ride to the train station even 5 minutes before the start time. We missed our train as a result. No where else in Japan did we experience anything close to this. Overall a terrible experience. Dont let this hotel sour your experience in Japan like it did for us. Worth it to splurge on a nicer hotel and get a special experience in this special town!
