Pleasant rooms that actually look like the hotel pictures! Recommended

We stayed here for two night while on a walking holiday. The location was great with several walking trails around the hotel (although not not particularly well marked - we got lost despite the walking map provided by the hotel) I can't fault the hotel on any aspect. We had balcony rooms in the newer part of the hotel. They were clean, spacious, nicely furnished, comfortable and had wall to ceiling French windiws opening out into the balcony with views down the valley. And they actually looked like the photos on the hotel website, which is not always the case. The restaurant is not open to outside guests every night of the week but hotel guests can still dine there (which we did) on a fixed menu. They slightly struggled with providing vegetarian food, but managed it well enough. I was impressed by the fact that they automatically charged us for our meals at the rate that was cheapest for us - Demi pension on the night when we ate a hearty meal and a la carte prices on the night when we had a light meal. Not a big thing but I can't imagine that many hotels would do it.

    Two nights in the mountains

I love to find hotels in secluded, difficult to reach places, and the the Auberge du Mehrbachel was a wonderful discovery. We spent two nights in a room in the newer part of the hotel with a balcony and a beautiful view of the valley below. The Auberge is a working farm, and I loved hearing the cow bells as the cows were moved from barn to pasture and back in the mornings and evenings as well as the roosters crowing in the morning. There was also a cat that wandered in and out of the dining room, and the morning we left a lama that we somehow had not seen before was wandering around the parking lot! We loved the Auberge for the setting, but the cuisine was also fabulous. The family makes its own cheese, butter and yogurt, all of which are available in the breakfast buffet which also included several different kinds of bread, sliced meats, soft boiled eggs, and home made jams. Dinners can be either a la carte or as part of demi-pension. We had selected demi-pension when I made the reservations, which saved us from having to make too many decisions. The first night we were offered a choice between potage de legumes or a salade. We both took the salade, which was then followed by coq in a Riesling sauce. The salade was a baloney-like sausage and emanthaler cheese cut up into little matchsticks with a mayonnaise dressing, along with sauerkraut with mushrooms I think, along with lettuce for greenery. Artful and delicious. The coq was served with a big dish of linguine for both of us. The second night the ambiance was a bit different since the restaurant was open to people not staying in the Auberge. Things got busier, and some of the food coming out of the kitchen was a bit fancier. We were again offered potage or a terrine maison, which we both selected. It was beautifully served with shredded carrots, something like cole slaw, tomato, cucumber and cornichon. We were also offered a choice for a main dish - trout or faux fillet. It turns out the trout is farm-raised, and the Auberge appears to belongs to some sort of trout co-op. It was served whole, with a plate for the bones, so I had lots of fun with my fish knife. Husband had the faux fillet which was delicious as well. Everybody at the hotel was pleasant and helpful, the service was excellent. When we checked out they gave us a little gift of home made treats for the road. My only complaint is the flies. We were besieged by flies in the dining room and our room became full of them as well. The reception desk has a cool device that I thought was some kind of fan, but when I asked I was told it was "pour attraper les mouches". Perhaps they should invest in more for the dining room and guest rooms?

Peaceful retreat, great views and food

Visiting a local company and a recent business trip, this hotel was recommended and didn't disappoint. Entering on a steep winding road up the mountain side, I was glad it was still early autumn and not mid-winter, but once we arrived, the views of the surrounding mountains ranges are spectacular. The hotel is picturesque just like shown in the brochures and was spotlessly clean. Both dinner and breakfast were excellent, with all the food locally sourced. My trout dinner was the biggest fish I had ever seen on a plate and was grilled to perfection. The charcuterie and cheeses are all produced locally and were distinctive and delicious. Also very quiet in the evening, so I had a great nights sleep. If you're a nature loving foodie looking for some chill time in the mountains, this is a great place.

Beautiful and quiet setting, comfortable room, great food

I was planning to visit nearby Mulhouse (Cite de l'automobile) but wanted to stay outside of the city, and this worked very well for that. It's a very quiet and scenic setting up a winding road (probably not great at night, but fine during the day). Mulhouse was about a 30 minutes drive away, and this would also work as a base for exploring southern Alsace and even Colmar. As with most Logis, the emphasis is on food, and all meals were excellent. I had supper here only one evening, but it was delicious (pork chops with mushroom gravy, various vegetables, spaetzle); the breakfasts were a standout, with freshly-baked breads, including banana bread, homemade yogurt, very flavourful apples and tiny peaches from nearby orchards, homemade jams, etc. Most staff appear to be fluent in three languages (French, German and English) - impressive. The only complaint was the quality of the Wifi, which was intermittent. It seemed to work better in the common areas than it did in the room. One of the perks of staying here is listening to and watching the cows being driven out to pasture early in the morning.

    Lovely relaxing stay

Auberge du Mehrbachel sits on the side of a mountain up a windy forest road above the village of St Amarin. It is a working farm and it was lovely to hear the cow bells and see lamas in the mornings !! We stayed here for four nights on a room only basis. Buffet Breakfast was 10 per person per day but we preferred to pick up coffee and a croissant out. Evening meals were al a carte but again we ate out. We can recommend Restaurant Valentino in Bitschwiller-du-Thann for fabulous pizza and pasta (closed Tuesday and Wednesday evenings). Our room was spacious and clean and had a balcony with a beautiful view. There was a bath and a shower in the ensuite, also a hair dryer. I miss, however, having tea and coffee making facilities in the room. The journey from Calais to here took around 6 hours and cost around 38 (taking both the toll roads). From the hotel it is an easy drive into Germany and Switzerland. We also spent a lovely afternoon walking around the pretty medieval town of Colmar (less than an hour away). More locally there is a view point / observatory called the Grand Ballon which has far teaching views if it's not too misty ! Unfortunately the weather wasn't kind enough for us to go on too many walks but there were many around - we parked in the village of Thann and followed one of three well sign posted paths through the forest and up hills to a beautiful chapel. All in all very relaxing !
