Quebec at its best-comfy and east-coast relaxedMy husband and I took a short, impromptu trip out to Malbaie. Off season means you have no worries about reservations or crowds. The prices are also amazing. The Richelieu Fairmont was $226 per night and looked gorgeous but we wanted something closer to the little town and restaurants. We found the 3 Canards and while we had only planned to stay for one night, we ended up spending 3 nights. The beds look uncomfortable but they are actually great. The floors are so solid, the hotel is super quiet and the doors dont hammer shut. Everyone has a great view of the St. Laurence from their balconies and the sun beams through the window every morning. The restaurant is a huge surprise with an offer of a delicious 5 course meal for $60. The service is great from people like Danielle, Eric and Michel who so kindly made a fresh pot of coffee after they were closed and whipped us up perfect Spanish coffees to douse the chill after we got back from town damp and cold. Merci Michel! Malbaie is close to great hiking trails and the little villages along the coast so a nice little drive along coastal roads. We are going to return with the family. There are tons of auberges along the way but we are so glad we chose 3 Canards for the people who work there, proximity to other restaurants, their restaurant and beautiful and short drives to other sites and towns. And the bread bakery in town is amazing! I didnt get the gentlemans name but we bought a bunch of bread, cheese and pate for our hike and he set us up with knives, plates and napkins so we had everything we needed. And yes, you may notice all the ratings I have are 5s but I dont review places I dislike unless they are truly terrible. All I can think of is whos livelihoods I could affect but I am so happy to rave about the great spots! Merci!

DisappointingWe have been loyal customers of this place for many years. Its been our favorite getaway place in summers, but after this last visit, Im sad to say this but we wont be coming back here. The rules in this place are very strange and absolutely not customer-focused. We came here just for 2 days. The weather was beautiful, 30 degrees. Real summer. In the morning at 8.30 I wanted to go for a swim at the pool, and it was closed... Turns out they open the pool only at 10.00. I went to reception and asked to at least open the gate of the pool so I could just lie on a long chair and enjoy the sun for an hour, before our departure, and the only answer I got from the receptionist was « No, Its against our rules. » I mentioned that these rules are rather strange because all the hotels open their pools very early and close late for the guests to enjoy them. The receptionist obviously didnt care about my remark.... it would have been so easy to please a client by simply giving me access at least to a long chair...:( After all you come to a place like this to enjoy the weather and time outside, not inside a tiny room.... these few hours of a getaway are precious for me and my husband. If the hotel ruins this time for us, Ill never come back again. This is definitely not our favorite summer place any more.

Magical La Malbaie and Charlevoix; unique propertyI took a group here, recently, and thoroughly enjoyed visiting this spot. To start, this location is spectacular, and the view from my balcony was incredible. All rooms face the water, and well they should!!! It is located close to town, the Charlevoix Casino, Fairmont Richelieu, and anything you might need. We also used it as a base for whale watching in Baie Ste.Catharines. Now, this is a quaint French Country Inn, so don't expect all the bells and whistles, except when it comes to the food; which is pricey (not unusual in this area) but amazing. Staff are friendly and very helpful. But be forewarned - many are unilingual. Better have a smattering of French if you need something. Eric and Maude were particularly kind and helpful - world class people! As for the rooms, they are all a bit unique and somewhat dated. I couldn't figure out how to operate the t.v. and didn't care, because of the balcony and amazing view from it. There is also a heated pool, shuffleboard, and other distractions. If you have mobility issues, I do not recommend this Auberge, as there are numerous stairs to navigate to get to the dining room/lounge/deck, and a long hike around the property to get to the back parking lot. Still, I loved this place, and will be back with the partner soon to see this beautiful part of Canada.

Great views in a simple Inn. Nice difference vs Manoir RichelieuThis is a medium sized Inn/Auberge, with a nice dining room, and some outdoor activities (pool, shuffleboard, etc). It also has great views towards the river. The location is okay, but everything is a drive since the auberge is on a steep hill and not near other restaurants to stores. Our breakfast was by menu, bit very nice. No fitness or other facilities. Lot's of parking, and one can drive quite close to their room. Mre relaxed and quite compared to the buzz at Le Manoir Richelieu

Stay for the view and a rest. This is an auberge of a certain era: read on the balcony while looking at the water; play croquet outside; have a drink on the terrace. It isn't in town so you'll have to drive anywhere else and, to be honest, La Malbaie was a bit of a let down compared to Baie St Paul just down the road (I'd stay there next time). The rooms are a bit dated but fine. The balcony was very small (2 chairs and just room to walk past them). The restaurant tried hard but everything lacked any seasoning/flavour.
