    The most magical experience

I have been so lucky to be a guest at Sekitei Atami four times now over the last decade and this is such a beautiful, gracious traditional inn you could ever stay at. The gardens are gorgeous and unique to the Japanese aesthetic. Our meals are just the most delectable seasonal dishes and presented so beautifully, so much care and detail into everything they do. The staff are friendly and made our stay so comfortable every time. Of all places that I have visited in Japan, this is the ryokan I want to go back to each and every time.

A very unique ryokan with distinctive Japanese cultural elements

Atami Sekitei is a very typical but unique hotel (or rather, ryokan) in Atami. I'd never stayed at a hotel like this in my life before. Everything here is distinctively Japanese: the wooden guest rooms are scattered in a big Japanese-style garden with trees, flowers, ponds, gold fish and bridges! And the open-air bathplace is also there! If you want to experience the Japanese culture in its most authentic form, this is the right place! Like traditional Japanese inns, they serve "omakase" (the chef decides what you eat) breakfast and dinner at a restaurant called "Uzu" within the garden, in a totally Japanese way. Every guest is assigned a separate waitress who serves you dishes and explains what the dishes are. The staff here are really friendly and welcoming. I do enjoy their service! I would highly recommend this ryokan to anyone interested in traditional Japanese culture and an open-air hot bath in the Japanese mountains.

  • Wonderfully traditional

We visit Atami at least once a year and this ryokan has become one of our favorite. Stay in their villas as it often has private outdoor hot springs and a walk through Japanese garden is quite a treat. Their common hot springs only has outdoor washing space so it can get very cold during winter. The food is amazing, prepared perfectly with seasonal and local ingredients. Their rice is cooked with natural spring that staff carries everyday from nearby mountains.

    Traditional oasis perfect for unwinding!

Note: this was our first ryokan experience, so I dont have much of a baseline to compare against. That said...it was fantastic! We stayed here one night at the end of a busy trip to Japan with the goal of unwinding and relaxing before our flight home. It fit the bill perfectly! We booked a Detached Japanese-style Room with Open-air Bath (Type A) Access: Atami train station is reached from Tokyo by bullet train in about 45 minutes. Easy taxi from there to the ryokan. Check-in: Friendly and professional, with enough English spoken to communicate our choices for dinner and breakfast time. Room: Larger than we expected - this was a very spacious suite with 3 main rooms, generous bathroom and shower area, and the private open air bath in back. Property: Another huge plus for this ryokan is the ability to wander the traditional Japanese grounds. While not as open plan as I had imagined, it was a delight to explore the well-maintained property. Garden areas, traditional stonework and lanterns, and pools with carp are there for enjoyment. Service: Very good, even with our very limited Japanese. While we were mostly left alone to enjoy the room and property, we were well taken care of in every interaction with staff. Food: Incredible! The superb restaurant facilities and staff perfectly complemented the delicious seasonal Japanese menu. Summary: Fantastic property with superb atmosphere and service. Perfect for a relaxing getaway in a traditional Japanese setting where privacy, service, and fine dining are valued. We hope to return!

    Traditional excellence

Upmarket traditional ryokan experience. Excellent onsen. We were allocated our own butler called Mariko who was Kind, caring and attentive. The preparation of the food was Exceptionally artistic and meticulous. Breakfasts very traditional and may not be to everyones taste. For an authentic Japanese experience, this Is the spot. Recommended to us by local Japanese lawyer as not cheap but the real thing
