Summer visit in the Goms area of the Valais SwitzerlandI spent 2 nights at this family run comfortable Swiss hotel in the Goms valley. Rooms were very clean. Service was friendly. It is well located both for vehicle excursions to the Gimsel, Furka and Nufenen passes and two nearby foot trails situated slightly higher than the valley, the Waldweg and the Gommer Hochenweg. For bicycle riders there is a flat path near the Rhone river. Our half board food was OK but I understand better when ordering A La Carte.

Lovely host, adjoining building not recommendedThe Astoria people are the most loveliest hosts, really make you feel welcome. The hotel is close to the cross-country ski-tracks; probably the most popular reason to stay here in winter. I would not recommend a room in the adjoining building (we had the attic room, no real view, what a shame in this spectacular mountain area...). As there is nothing more in the room than the absolutely necessary, I would rather stay in the main hotel (to get hot water for tea, get breakfast, etc.).

Charming Hotel - Great LocationA group of us spent 1 night at Hotel Astoria. Our room was in the newer addition. It was clean, spacious, and comfortable. The staff was helpful and friendly. We ate both breakfast and dinner at the hotel. The food was excellent. Our waiter was outstanding. If you are looking for a hotel near the Furka Pass - this is a great choice.

Very friendly staff, food ok.The staff is very friendly, food ok. Everything is very clean. The hotel lacks a real lobby, they have a rather crammed corner on the second floor with some black sofas that is not really inviting. With a dog we were in a room with a bit of oldfashioned furniture. Unfortunately, a pair of our skis (rcs Fischer, not the latest model, but still in good shape, and somebody left really old useless ones instead) were stolen in the middle of the day from the stack in front of the hotel. Watch out.

Do Not Accept Room 501I stayed in this hotel during a cross country ski race week-end, which is high season. For reasons that I still dont completely understand and have to attribute to greed and poor judgment, they booked me into a room that I would not allow my dog to stay in. The ceiling was so low I could not stand up! The door to the room was so small I had to duck just to get in. How any person could believe that this room qualified for human habitation is incredible. Peter, the owner, tried to explain unbelievably that some people liked the room. Absolutely ridiculous and worse than poor judgment. Aside from that, the hotel was clean and the other rooms were okay (I had to stay in the hovel one night and Peter found me other rooms in the hotel after much complaining for the first and third night of my stay). The bedding was comfortable. Service is not something that seems to be important if you are looking for help with the luggage. I had a large bag that had to lugged up the stairs with no help from the staff (attribute it to the embarrassment of putting me in the room not fit for habitation). By the way, there was no discount or any indication, other than a warning (in German) that the hotel room had low eves. This was meaningless. Had he properly informed it didnt have stand up height, I would have booked elsewhere. In short, this nonsense put a dent in my trip and I dont see myself ever going back.
