    Relaxing stay

I stayed 3 nights in this ryokan style hotel. It is located in Asama Onsen, approx. 20 minute bus ride from Matsumoto. The large building is in the middle of a hill overlooking the town, but easily accessible from the bus stop (5 minutes walk, the hill is not very demanding). The front part of the building is traditional, with noren ("curtains") at the entrance but the building itself is a modern concrete structure. The interior of the hotel is purely Japanese and beautifully decorated. My room was on the 5th floor with fabulous views over the town. It was large (10-tatami) with a small space with chairs separated by the paper sliding doors from the main room. The room had an en-suite bathroom. There was the standard tea making facility in the room, yukata was provided, and some toiletry products laid out in the bathroom. The communal bath facilities are good and clean, with lots of space and 3 pools, 2 inside and 1 outside. There is one large indoor pool with warm water, and a smaller one with hot water. I was a bit disappointed with the outdoor pool (I would give the hotel 4.5 starts if this was possible) which was small and a bit tired. My price package included dinner and breakfast and these were excellent. They consisted of lots of small dishes and the cook managed to present different dishes every evening and morning - amazing. The ryokan makes its own soba noodles (a speciality in the Matsumoto area and a good present for your Japanese friends) and you can see the cook from the lobby preparing them behind a glass partition. The hotel offers a massage service in your room - I can recommend it. On a Friday evening, there was a classical concert in the lobby (piano & violin) after dinner. It was a slightly bizarre scene, guests sitting on the sofas in their yukatas while the pianist wore an evening gown and the violinist a tuxedo. Nevertheless, very enjoyable. I enjoyed my stay here, it was very relaxing. The town is close enough to Matsumoto to make a day trip by bus.
