Chilled Out Beach HouseThis is the sort of hostel that you will either love or hate, depending on what kind of a holiday you are after and what you look for in your accommodation. For me, I found it fantastic and exactly what I was after - a laid-back, easy-going, quiet and relaxing place to rest and recuperate at in between some awesome adventures in the area. Keeping in mind that this place is really just a beach shack converted into a backpackers, the vibe you get is much more of being in someone's house than a conventional hostel. Meaning the 'reception' is really just a computer desk in the living room, there are only 2 bedrooms, the kitchen is just like someone's house kitchen, and there's a clothesline in the backyard to hang your washing. So if you are looking for a 'big' hostel with lots of people and industrial facilities, this might not be your thing. The 'staff', for the most part, seemed to be travellers themselves - most of them slept in caravans or rooms out the back, and almost all of them worked elsewhere in town as well as far as I could make out. Some of them were super nice and friendly - others were more 'hands off', but I personally loved this because one of my pet peeves in a hostel is being hassled by over-friendly staff all the time. But if you are the sort of person who looks for fanfare and conversation when you check in and hang about, you might find the 'casual' vibe here not to your liking. Having said that I found there was lots of useful information lying about and there was almost always someone available to answer any questions I might have. This place is clean, cozy and fairly priced. Breakfast is included and since there are only ever a maximum of 8ish guests + staff, there's never a rush and you can really help yourself to as much as you want. Wifi is free, it's 5 mins walk from town and the beach, and generally everyone is in bed at a reasonable hour. This place is really much more like staying at a mate's beach shack than it is a hostel. I loved it, and would recommend it to anyone looking for budget accommodation in beautiful Apollo Bay.

Homely but lacks some detailsThe place is well located with nice view in front of the bay. Homely atmosphere and spacious commom areas. Still...it lacks some details like hangers in the showers, matching new sheets & linen... the recepcion is a mess of a tiny rooms with plenty of useless stuff.

Where to start on this? Oh, yes, AVOID!We booked a double room, arrived to be given wrong directions to the "lodge". Finally found lodge, who knew nothing of booking. Reception called Backpackers at number 47, and told them off . Sent back to 47, who showed us to "cottage" down the road , basically, a rundown old bungalow that needed a lot of attention (dodgy door locks, etc). Bed was musty, "breakfast " ( technically included in rate) was as basic as could be ( wheat biscuits and toast bread). Generally, place was dirty . HQ was more like a hash den than reception! When we moved to next town, hostel owner knew immediately that we had been to Apollo, due to level of poor experiences there by other travellers, and also overheard complaints by others. Apollo... am trying to forget the experience.

Great Atmosphere but accommodation needs some workStayed with two friends while traveling The Great Ocean Road this past weekend. Ill admit it wasnt my first choice and we had some obvious problems between booking.com saying no beds were available and other backpackers being sold out this was a last minute booking. The staff is friendly enough, and the area is good enough as well. The bathrooms are dodgy and when someone gets on the top bunk it sounds like its going to fall on you. Seems to be under new management hopefully some positive changes to come.

Great spot!Had a great time. Quinn is an awesome owner and made me feel right at home. Lots to do and see in the area. And the backpackers is much nicer than in the pics. Looking forward to when they open the campsite. See yas next time, guys! :)
