    Disappointment

We spent two weeks there in September 2015. The whole stay in the resort was one big disappointment. The hotel itself is located in the middle of nowhere and so if you dont have a car or your travel agent doesnt organize trips for you, you are stuck. The hotel advertised shuttles to a few nearby towns but when we asked about one we were told there werent enough people interested and therefor there were no shuttles. We were advised to take a taxi to Menfi for 40 Euros return (I would call it a rip-off). Hotel room average size, simple furnished but it is OK as you want to spend most of the day outdoors anyway. One small wardrobe with 10 hangers and two shelves which isnt enough for 3 adults. A double bed and a convertible chair for the third person unfortunately it was me who slept on it. It was very uncomfortable and not suitable for an adult to sleep on for two weeks. A balcony has no furniture (i.e. you can only dry your beach towels there). The rooms are cleaned daily and towels are changed as you request. The room cleaning service was with no problem. There was entertainment for children and adults later on every night. We stayed in the main hotel building with our windows facing directly the stage where all entertainment took place. The music was on full blast every single night and it was impossible to have any conversation in the room or watch TV with the window open until about midnight. Unfortunately for us there was nowhere to escape because there is nowhere to go .... The animation team activities were in Italian language only, we didnt take part in any so I cant really say what they were like. The beach is about 400 metres from the hotel, an easy walk, or there is a shuttle minibus that runs every half hour/hour. The beach itself has no facilities apart from sunbeds, parasols and there was also a lifeguard. About 100 metres off the beach there is 1 portable toilet (hey, but plenty of bushes and palmtrees around!). The swimming pool by the hotel has sunbeds and a few parasols. Swimming in it is allowed only with a swimming cap on! Restaurant there is a cold buffet in the middle of the restaurant where you can help yourself. Main meals (usually the choice of 2, sometimes 3), pasta and soup are served by chefs from behind counters. The queues for hot meals were long and often put me off from having any warm food. The variety is not great, meals tend to repeat often, sometimes even 2-3 days in a row. The main problem of the restaurant, however, is the cleanliness. Around the drink machines were swarms of fruit flies and the floor was sticky. One of the coffee machines was filthy and disgusting and nobody seemed to bother to clean around it. During our last dinner we had ants crawling on our table...! Tablecloths were dirty and so were the jugs and bottles for water and wine. The restaurant staff work long hours, breakfast, lunch and dinners every day, maybe that is why they do not have time to clean. Bar you can pay only with a card with a prepaid top up. The top up is non refundable. Thats what we were told when we checked in so we decided not to use it. There is wifi in the bar area, sometimes very slow. Menfi Beach Resort hotel calls itself a 4* hotel but it is a poor 3*. I would not recommend it to anyone. It was very disappointing and I was glad to leave. One of the worst holidays Ive had :-(.

    NOT "All-Inclusive"

I am sitting in front of the Bar of the All-Inclusive Melfi Beach Resort, listening to three radio stations at once and sipping on my overpriced 3,50 beer. The babypool has just been drained of water because kids came out of it with bloody feet the last couple of days. In one and a half hours it is dinner time and I still feel nauseas from lunch But let us begin by sorting out some misconceptions about this place. When they say, All-Inclusive - according to V. from Reception, only the room and the food is included - nothing more. So once you check into the resort, you have to pay an obligatory fee for the Animation, the use of the pool and the right to their free beach. This obligatory fee sums up to be 5 per person, per day plus 1,50 per person, per day taxes. The use of the Spa, the Bar, their section of the Beach, and anything else is NOT included even when paying the above mentioned obligatory fee. The Food: Really miserable. It looks good on paper but the quality of the food is quite horrid. The variety is fine but they pretty much serve the same dishes all over for the entire stay. A bird called the restaurant its home and keeps flying over and to the buffet table. The bird seems fine with the food and the restaurant seems fine with the bird. Breakfast is very basic and decent at most. Be prepared to wait in line for coffee since you will find only one working coffee machine for hundreds of people. Lunch usually includes the left overs from the night before. Renamed, rearranged and served. We usually love a good plate of Pasta, not here. Today, we went straight to the meat just to find that it was mostly fat and barely edible. The fish however is worth a try, nothing special but considering the alternative, often a wise choice. Dinner, especially today, is nothing to look forward to. It sounds like a combination of meals from the last few days combined. The Pizza over here is the worst Pizza I have ever tasted. Italian food is world famous and we never refuse good Italian cuisine, but we may skip dinner tonight which brings us to The Location: You would like to discover the area, have some decent food in a Restaurant nearby? Thats tough, because this place is completely deserted. But Resort Menfi has also a solution for people who would like to escape their mostly French moping crowd and offers a trip to the nearest Mall - for only 70. Also, the beach is further than 500 meters and even though they offer a shuttle service, you will have to walk at least 200 meters. Today, someone checked in in a wheel chair and I simply have to mention, this Resort is in NOT in any circumstance suitable for wheelchairs. The Pool: Their outdoor pool is amazing. Honestly, we absolutely love their pool. It offers enough room for everyone, the depth is very appropriate and the water is warm (June) and clean. Every morning you can participate in their course of water gymnastics. On the other hand, the baby pool has proven to be brutal in the last few days. Many kids (including our son) would leave it with bloody feet, the staff was informed, the news spread quickly around the guests here, but a day later there were still kids playing in that pool until they finally drained the water out. So now we are looking at a dry pool, curious to see if it will ever be refilled again (update: pool has been refilled, staff says it has been fixed but none of the parents are sending kids in to swim, we also kept our son out of it.) The Staff: If your job was to inform every single guest upon arrival that their All-Inclusive is indeed deceiving and false, you would probably turn into one very bitter person. The Staff at the Reception is not friendly in fact, once you pay - they will never greet or acknowledge your presence again and any further question will seem like a bother. (Ciao Signora V.!) The Staff at the Pool, the animators, the spa ladies, the cleaning staff, about half of the people working the restaurant and even the shuttle driver on the other hand are very friendly and helpful. The animators do a fabulous job and throughout the day they look very closely after your kids in the pool area. The Rooms: For our stay we booked two rooms. For some reason they are not next to each other and three rooms apart. The Room itself is rather small but sufficient- summed up: No working telephone in both rooms (you can only call the front desk), TV receives about 8 Channels with frequent disturbances where a very loud noise scares you to death, rattling door everytime someone goes in and and out of their rooms or enters the floor, NO Wifi in the room - in fact, they advertise free Wifi in the bar area, which is pretty much non existent. There is very little cellphone reception unless you have a plan specifically for this area. Yesterday there was barely any water pressure in our room but the cleanliness overall is acceptable. The airconditioning works in one room but in the other it is weak. The Grounds: It seems impressive at first with all of the flowers, grass and tropical trees. There is a large coy pond at the entry where you will find one giant coy swimming in the dirtiest water that barely covers his back. We asked several times for them to at least put more water in for that poor fish. To date, it has been 4 days and no one seems to care enough to fix this. Always watch your step here at the Menfi Resort. These paver stones tend to move and if you are not careful you can trip and fall. The same applies to the sections with the wood tiling, some pieces are missing and/or broken and/or laying around. Most chairs and tables outdoors are covered in bird poop. The kids play area, partially broken equipment and in that area, you will find cocklebur stickers. Also, some wall stones (sandstones) are in need of replacement - my son was walking on top of them and one cracked in half, broke, making him fall. In fact because of the mentioned floor conditions he fell numerous times. Overall, my son has had a rough week. The Beach: As I mentioned, you will have to walk. With or without shuttle. The shuttle lets you off about 100 meters from the property owned Beach-Bar which can be used for an extra fee of 25 per day. I absolutely do not recommend stopping here because that portion of the beach seems to be the worst. It is dirty, full of bugs and overall simply small. The reception refused to acknowledge that it was dirty but I can guarantee that I did not imagine all of the plastic bottles and trash laying there. Also, I have been to many beaches and never seen the kind of bugs that infested this area, it seemed that there were more bugs than sand. If there is such a thing as a sand cockroach, that is what this looked like. Overall, skip this section if possible and walk the additional 200 meters to the free beach which also here, if you would like to use the chairs and umbrellas on the first row, be prepared to pay an extra 10. That section of the beach is much nicer but here again, it is definitely not one of the nicer beaches of Sicily. The Spa: Solid. To use the Spa you have to pay 15 for 1,5 hours. The hot tub is semi-hot and the indoor pool is freezing cold. We booked two massages both of which were very good (40 for roughly 50 minutes). Not many guests seem to use the spa which has the benefit of almost complete tranquility within the area. You will not find any brochures in your room with prices so you first need to go to the spa, check out their services and pricing, make an appointment, pay the exact amount to the reception to put on your Service Card. Do not bring any valuables, there are no lockers and I was told that stuff tends to disappear. The Bar: Very simple. A little over-priced, no fresh Italian gelato and the freezer for the prepackaged ice-cream broke, the ice melted, the freezer has been fixed and right now they sell refrozen ice-cream. To purchase anything from the bar, you need to recharge your Bar-Card at the reception - be aware that any excess amount at the end of your stay, will not be refunded. Overall, as odd as it seems, I still have to recommend the Menfi Beach Resort. You have to consider that this place is located in Sicily, one of the poorest spots on the globe. Generally speaking, this island is still in desperate need of development and globalisation. This Resort has a four star rating which again, in Italy and especially Sicily, has a different meaning. Know what to expect and you will not be as disappointed and still be able to enjoy your stay. The Temples near Agrigento are worth a visit (take water with you, you will need it). Do not come without sufficient funds as most services are in deed not included. I reccomend a stay of 4 max. 5 days. In case you are purely into a beach vacation, check out San Vito Lo Capo, Castelammare del Golfo, Porto Empedocles or even the beach at Realmonte. Be safe, informed and well-prepared wherever you go.

    Great holiday

Booked for three nights but stayed on an extra night. Pleasant, helpful staff, varied menu in the restaurant every day and a great shuttle service to the nearby beach. Animation evenings were enjoyable. Would go again.
