A lovely surprise! Our family ended up at this hotel unexpectedly after our reservation at our original hotel was abruptly canceled on arrival. It's been a long time since we've stayed anywhere that I haven't researched to death, and this turned out to be a charming surprise - Hotel an der Rennbahn looks more like a small historic inn which is affiliated with a restaurant. The rooms were incredibly clean and the housekeeping each day was faultless. We had one dinner meal the first night which turned out to be one of the best meals of our trip, at a very reasonable price. The breakfast buffet was also a huge spread with a huge array of fresh choices typical for a German style breakfast. All of the guests we saw appeared to be German, which contributed to the feeling that we having a very authentic European experience. The staff's English was basic but sufficient. The location is in a residential neighborhood about 15 minutes outside of Dresden, but it is in easy walking distance to public transport, and parking is free. One caveat - there is no air conditioning, and one of our rooms on the 3rd floor got pretty hot, but the one on the second floor was fine as we slept with the windows open. I would ask for a room facing the back (not the street) and on a lower floor in the summer season. All in all, I thought it was excellent value with a lot of charm (it seems like the kind of place Rick Steve would pick).

Good value and an interesting experienceThis hotel is really a kind of inn--and probably always was, although it has more rooms than inns tend to have. It's located in Seidnitz, a leafy suburb of Dresden (but which is well connected to the town center by a fast, modern tram which operates on a parallel street). The kitchen is obviously one of the best in town, since the dining room fills up every night, not just with hotel guests but locals. They serve good, hearty Saxon cuisine and the breakfast buffet is tasty and abundant, as they trend to be in this country. The rooms are basic really, but the bathrooms are modern and well maintained and the hotel is quiet. One does have the feeling of living in Dresden rather than staying there as a tourist. The price-value relationship is very good. I am not sure about the language skills of the staff since I do speak German, but there was an American family of six staying there too--I just met them as I was checking out--and they seemed to have had no problem.

Traditional old building and good restaurantI stayed this hotel as business. It takes 15 minits walk from Fraunhofer FEP. It takes about 20 minits away from train station. There is a bus stop nearby hotel. Hotel restaurant was not big, but taste is very good. Their menue was almost original recipe. Soup ans Salad were very good. Hotel front desk and restaurant casher were combined as one. The room is not new, but it was clean. Hotel fee was not expensive.

Out of town centre but pleasant enoughYou are a good 5 km from downtown Dresden. Yes you can catch a tram from two blocks away (take about 15 mins on the tram to get to downtown) but if mobility is not your strong suite then look elsewhere. Additionally most of the rooms are located up some stairs from the foyer. Having said that, the staff were pleasant, the rooms clean and the bathrooms likewise. However given my room faced the main road it was far from quiet and despite being a warm night I had to sleep with the window closed in order to get some sleep.
