Not the best hotelWe only needed a place to stay for 8 hours beofre heading to Halong Bay so we lowered our budget for a comfortable and clean hotel. The room was clean and large. However the furniture was tired and the beds were unsprung. It was also very noisy and I could hear the lift doors opening all night. The bathroom smelt damp and was quite tired. The limited interaction we had with staff showed that they were very helpful. Photo of reception is accurate but the rest of the hotel is not up to the same standard by a long way. The hallways in particular looked quite worn. Our biggest problem with this hotel was the safety aspect. There was no fire safey information in the hotel welcome pack. There did not apear to be any fire alarms or extinguishers. The only exit is the main reception door which we found out is blocked with motorbikes (inside) and locked with a bicycle lock. Although there is a porter at reception it didn't help me sleep assuming he doesn't sit there 24hours.

Great hotelGreat hotel and central location. Awesome breakfast included. English speaking staff. Tommy was helpful at night and Tracy and the other front desk staff were fantastic during the day. The beds were very comfortable too. If you want a more quiet rest, choose a room off the main road. Our room faced the main road and stayed very active until about midnight. But if youre going out at night this isnt a problem; However the streets wake up early, about 5:30am. Even so, we recommend this hotel.

A pretty poor hotel, choose elsewhere.Stayed here for two nights separated by a trip to Halong Bay. On arrival we were taken to a room which actually looked gorgeous, but the light globes had blown out so instead of fixing the issue, we were taken to another room which was horrible. The door had holes in it and the window wouldn't shut properly. These were massive issues because it was pouring rain in Hanoi at the time and the room smelt damp and musty. Furniture was old and creaky, bed was pretty bad with stained sheets etc. NO HOT WATER - not in the AM or PM. On our second night (after returning from Halong Bay) they tried to put us back in the same room. I refused and requested a different room where the windows were at least sealed. Beds and furniture were of the same standard. The hallways appear to be a storage room for toilet paper, too. Breakfast - I wouldn't touch it. It was cooked by a couple of teenage girls and boys. I noticed the girl brushing her teeth and rinsing in the kitchen sink. On the plus side - wifi was free and the hotel held our suitcases while we went to Halong Bay and also while we went to Sapa, even when we weren't staying there on return.

A Good StayI had been let down by another hotel which emailed me at the last minute to cancel and so on arrival al the bus station I asked a taxi driver to take me to a hotel in the Old Town and this is where he took me. The signage on the hotel still has its preveious name, "Smile Hotel". For $20 I had a large room with a good bathroom and even a balcony, admittedly with no kind of view. There were two computers in the lobby and even one in the room, although that was not connected to the Internet. The location is in the middle of the Old Town, about 10 minutes walk from the lake, but the noise of the old town did not penetrate to my 4th floor room. The receptionist on duty in the daytime spoke English fluently and was very helpful to me and to other travellers. Breakfast was not included but apparently there is a breakfast service for extra. I do not know what connection, if any, the taxi driver had to the hotel or if they paid him commission, but his meter was running fast and when i pointed this out to him he promised me a "discount"! - on arrival at the hotel the meter was showing 20km and a price for that distance whereas the journey had been about 6km - I paid him appropriately for 6km which didn't please him but he eventually accepted it and went away. This, and the fact that I notice that the hotel's website has been suspended does make me a little unsure of this hotel although my personal stay was fine.
