Hotel mit CharmeI have to admit - I might not be the typical hotel guest. I admire hotels with personality much more than hotel chains. Yes it is much easier to book a hotel chain ... because you know what you get. But isn't Christmas more fun if you do not know what is in the presents? When I arrived all the parking lots at the Altstadthotel Am Theater were used - however the lovely lady at the reception desk helped me to get one by moving away here own car from a prime spot. That's what I call service. From the outside the hotel looks not really like an inviting hotel. Also there is no elevator so I had to carry my luggage to the room. But what a lovely room. A huge space with convenient sitting area... and ancient treasure within Cottbus. Breakfast was lovely and chatting with the staff was always pleasant! There is hardly anything I did not like at this hotel ... maybe the green tiles in the bathroom. :)

Charming Hotel (and staff)We (2 adults and 2 teenagers) spent a night at this very charming hotel on our way to Krakow, Poland. The hotel's parking lot is conveniently situated to the rear of the hotel. The hotel is conveniently situated about a 10-15 minut walk from the old town and market, where there are several restaurants to choose from. It is also close to a large shopping center. Our room (junior suite) was perfect; a very spacious living room with TV, portable air-conditioning, facility for making coffee/tea, mini-bar, refrigerator, fantastic King/Queen-sized bed which was very comfortable. Beautiful heavy drapes, that kept the street noise and the light at bay. My husband is a smoker and was delighted to see that there was an ashtray on the little balcony that he could enjoy a smoke when he felt like. There was a very sweet and very helpful lady at the reception desk, who spoke excellent English. Really good breakfast with fantastic pancakes yum! Only minus being that there was no elevator, making carting of luggage to, in our case, the 3rd floor, quite strenuous. I would have to wrack my brain to find a negative with our stay - perhaps the green bathroom tiles.

Hotel in walking distance to the old townExtremely friendly and helpful staff - carrying our suitcases upstairs as well as giving information for visiting the old town. Perfect distance to the old town. Nice breakfast room in the (unfortunately now closed) restaurant; good breakfast with variety. Unfortuantely the hotel is situated at a very noisy junction of main streets, but we had a quiet room at the rear. But thus we had to cope with a tiny room.. There is no elevator. Good breakfast, but unfortuantely with reheated rolls and orange fruit nectar instead of orange juice.

A very nice family-run hotel close to everything in CottbusAltstadthotel At Theater is situated in a nice historical building close to the Threater (hence the name) but also close to anything else in Cottbus. It is on the way from the railway station (5-10 minutes walk) to the historical centre (5-10 minutes walk). There are buses and trams passing by the hotel, though at the moment, there is a reconstruction going on and some lines are not working (but I suppose, this is temporary). I booked a single room and was pleased with my choice. The room was clean and cosy. I appreciated there was a kettle for tea and coffee. I would have liked to have a fridge but I think, they only come with some rooms. The bathroom is interesting. There is a clock on the mirror counting how long light in the bathroom is on (useful to recall to switch it off). And the water only runs for some time and then has to be tapped on again (maybe the same idea as with the clock, this time applicable to water). I did not mind either of these things, I mention them simply because I saw them for the first time. Breakfast is served in the restaurant on the ground floor. It is a nice and cosy restaurant and the choice for breakfast is really good. The price - 9.50 Euro - is a bit high but nothing unusual for Germany. Wifi works well and the staff at the reception are all nice and helpful (and kind to talk in English to those, whose German is very poor, like me). I would definitely choose this hotel again during my next stay in Cottbus (which, by the way, is a very nice town with many things to do in the town and in the surroundings).
