Disastrous hospitalityWe visited Alpine Lodge in Dec and stayed for 2 nights in a 2 bedroom villa, which made sense given we are a family with 2 kids. The property is well maintained. Bed rooms are quite comfortable and the electric blankets were a great help. We needed them though it was summer ! Locks in bathrooms and bed rooms would have been welcome to afford a little more privacy. Not a great view to boast of, one of the rooms overlooked a vacant piece of land across which you could get a glimpse of the ocean. Kitchen was well equipped and theres a Four Square super market within walking distance to stock up. A few eateries were within walking distance - town centre being a short distance by drive. The property is separated from the beach by a railway line that runs in the backyard - theres a small gate thankfully as the railway line is operational. So all was good but my experience changed from great to a disaster in my last 15 mins I spent there. We are typically used to 12 PM checkouts but here and we realised in NZ, at many places check out is 10 AM. We had noted that and were working towards the same when we realised about 9:45 that we needed little more time - till about 10:30. Spoke to the lady owner who almost chided me for making such a request ! I wasnt prepared for this - so requested for at least time till 10:15 to which she replied 10 AM sharp. Now that left us 10 mins time after losing 5 mins in the conversation to pack up in a super hurry, get kids ready and dump things into our car. Now that definitely tops the charts as the most disastrous experience we ever had across any country in the globe. All across NZ, people were nice and friendly and this was a total shock !! We all know that sometimes we cant agree to requests but theres always a way to communicate. This behaviour was completely uncalled for. Kaikoura is a wonderful place and we will look to visit again but goes without saying we have no intention to stay back in Alpine View !

Best value for money in KaikouraBut firstly let me put this into perspective, accommodation in Kaikoura is very expensive! Unit was clean and recently renovated views of the ocean and Kaikoura Range from unit 5, but complex is 1.5 kml from town centre but New World supermarket and Lobster Inn are both under 5 minutes walk. My wife and I had a very comfortable stay.

Good value in KaikouraStaff (owners?) very friendly and helpful, and our unit was very clean, roomy and comfortable. Good value - was surprised by how expensive accommodation is in Kaikoura. Bit disappointed to find when we arrived, an at the gate price advertised lower than we had paid on booking.com - may be to ring and check first. Location is fine if you have a car. No view but close to the beach. Quite a lot of traffice noise at night (trucks off the ferry coming through on the main road?) and also a train overnight. A limit on internet (although more than we needed) and kept dropping and had to reenter password each time we came back, which is unusual in accomodation these days.

Dirty dishes and unfriendly staffWe booked via expedia and I made a mistake to have my children booked but without their ages. When I came to pay they requested that I pay $40 for each child with took the booking to NZD 200/night! (you can get much much better places for that money in Kaikoura during Spring). My expedia booking said "Standard Apartment, 1 Bedroom (4 People)". The place was overall clean, but all kitchen utensils were very dirty. There was butter and pieces of squashed muffins on several plates. Wine glasses and silverware equality dirty. We had to clean everything ourselves. We also found a lamp which had the cable stripped in a 1cm section. The lamp was plugged in a multiplug which made it even more dangerous as the kids plugged their electronics next to that stripped cable and could have touched it. When my husband brought the lamp to the reception and showed it, the staff did not apologize or though it was dangerous to have the cable stripped.

Small budget room without a viewReception greeted us with a complaint that we were last to arrive. (You cant check til 2. We arrived at 3.30). Name is alpine view. Our view is of the units opposite across a gravel driveway. Studio is around 30sqm. Kitchenette was a challenge to make wraps. Microwave barely adequate. Wine glasses very small. Outdoor patio and furniture meant a place to sit outside to smoke. Perfect for a place to sleep enroute to or from ferry. Was very clean apart from stain on carpet. Bed old. Couch old.
