    Funny Little Place, But Good

Hotel Alpha in Nuremberg is north of the central city near the airport (Flughafen), just off the U2 subway (U-Bahn) line in the Ziegelstein District. It sits in a largely residential neighbourhood, down a slightly crooked street off the main traffic artery. To get there you pass a bathroom installation shop and an auto repair shop, and it sits next to a restaurant/beer garden, the Gruene Au Zum Breznwirt, which seems to be a favourite amongst German camper van owners. A village green or commons is right in front of the main entrance. All this may strike North Americans as a bit unusual, even off-putting. We are conditioned by strict zoning laws to expect more physical separation between businesses and residences. Not true in Germany. Particularly as German cities expanded after WWII into former suburbs, businesses and family homes developed side-by-side, meaning locations like Hotel Alphas are fairly common. From the outside, the hotel is rather unprepossessing. Its a plain, three-storey grey building that looks more like a student dormitory than a metropolitan hotel. Once inside, the rooms convey something of the same ambience, like a better-than-average student residence or a plain-Jane B&B. The closest picture I can think of is the Ibis chains rooms. But the service is pleasant and prompt and everything is functional, clean and comfortable. There is an elevator and each room has a small refrigerator. The bathroom is clean, modern, functional and plain. Hotel Alphas suburban location means it is far quieter than any downtown hotel could promise. Despite the airports proximity, we experienced zero aircraft noise. Also, parking is free, which means you just park wherever you can find a space on the street. The breakfast is straight-up German: an all-you-can-eat buffet of eggs, cold cuts, cheese, fruit, Semmelbrot (that slightly crusty Kaiser roll the Bavarians love), jam and sausages. Its not French, neither is it English, and you either like it or you dont. I learned to enjoy it when I was a student in Munich; my wife usually skips it, claiming its too much like lunch. But it was only 5 Euros. Try matching that anywhere else. Getting from the Hotel Alpha to central Nuremberg should mean taking the subway. We had a car, but parking in downtown was more than I wanted to bear. The train station is roughly 200 metres walk south from the hotel. When you reach the intersection of Ziegelsteinstrasse and Rathbergerstrasse, look up. The station is right there under the modern glass structures. It is extremely modern and well-signed, as well as fully accessible. It is a two-zone ride on the train to downtown Nuremberg, which will take about 12-14 minutes. You can buy a 12 stripe ticket at the station (and glory be, you can use a foreign credit card in the automatic dispenser). You fold the ticket two stripes back before inserting it into the Entwerter located in the train cars. The machine validates your ticket by stamping the date, time, route and direction of your trip on the exposed stripe. There are fare checkers on some trains, so I dont advise trying to cheat. That could cost you 60 Euros or more, fines levied on the spot. Train service is fast, efficient, and rarely crowded. We never had to wait more than three minutes for a train in either direction. We once took seats in the first car, where I realized the train was operating without a driver! Its completely automated. By the way, thats why the wait times were so short. Intervals between trains are 100 seconds at rush hour! For reasonably-priced, no-frills accommodations outside the hustle and bustle of the central city, but with easy connections to either the airport or downtown, I recommend the Hotel Alpha. I would certainly stay there again.

Good if need somewhere close to airport

We stayed here after having our flight cancelled and needed somewhere urgently It is a no thrills place, with the rooms very basic and a bit short of air conditioning There is a restaurant and breakfast on site which is a plus point For the price we paid, well worth it

    modest service

We booked this hotel to be closer to airport. We arrived around 20:00 and check in. The women from reception was very slow and tired. No smiling and just did the papers work, gave us the key and that's it. No other information when we ask about the area. We search 5-6 minutes for the room and when we enter we had the surprised. We requested one double room and we received twins beds but we accepted it. We wanted to drink something from the fridge but we didn't find any price. I was to ask downstairs to ask at the reception and the answer what I received was "How I supposed to know. Should be a list of price there" I know that price was higher than other hotels because was closer to the airport but the quality should be almost the same like other hotels in the area. The free internet was down most of the night. The speed was so slow and bed quality. To listen a song we needed to wait 2-3 minutes to start.

    Very dissapointing

Pictures on the website are very misleading. The hotel rooms are completely different in reality which is very dissapointing. Rooms are very very small and even though we requested to have a double bed, we were placed in a tiny room with two single beds. What a shame Hotel Management does not respect client requests when the booking was made 3months in advance. I do not recommend you to book this hotel if you cone to Nüremberg.
