the most unpleasant hosts - avoid at all costsIn an industry with such an emphasis on hospitality, the behaviour of the hosts was utterly horrific. In all our travels, we have never encountered such deliberately nasty and downright rude treatment from anyone. Don't let the high ratings fool you - avoid this B&B at any cost. We had made a booking for one night directly with the owner John himself by email, and not once in our correspondence did he mention that they only check guests in before 7 pm. Just as we were setting off, at around 6pm, we called up as a courtesy to inform the owners that we would be reaching at 8:30pm, as predicted by our satnav. The standard procedure, in our experience, is that the owners leave the side door open or the keys for the guests to let themselves in if they are arriving late, and we were hoping that they would be able to offer us such an option. To our dismay, we were told that check-in would close at seven, and after some negotiation, we were told that we had to get there by eight. Despite us explaining that the satnav predicted arrival after eight, there was no flexibility offered. When we were half an hour away, we called up to update them on our arrival time, which was predicted to be 8:10, after having driven rashly, breaking speed limits. The phone was answered by Helen, who told us that "if we did not reach by eight, then goodnight", and then hanging up, in response to us explaining that we breaking speed limits and driving dangerously to reach. We were aghast - we were under so much stress, and her reply was deliberately nasty; any decent human being would have simply told us to drive safely, and waited a few minutes, especially as the lodge was their residence. The worst part of this entire ordeal was that we were not informed at any stage of time constraints on checking in, and we were expected to have checked booking.com prior to our arrival, despite having booked directly with them. We were subjected to undue and unnecessary stress, and risked our lives to satisfy the whims of petulant lodge owners, in the comfort of their own home. Having driven dangerously, and arriving at 7:58pm, we rung the bell three times, to no avail, despite seeing someone in the front room. Desperately, we phoned them up at exactly 8:00pm, and this person, who turned out to be John, reluctantly opened the door to let us in. Upon reflection on this ordeal, we came across other incidents similar to the one in which we found ourselves - the most recent being in January 2019 - and we dread to think what would have happened to us had we arrived two minutes later. Their behaviour, especially Helen's, was absolutely shocking, and was purely vindictive. There is no excuse to speak to any human being in this way, particularly not to paying clients; especially when our needs were not remarkably unreasonable, given that all they needed to do was open the door (they lived in the B&B) or leave the keys on the porch, like most similar businesses. I find it hard to put into words how actively unpleasant the hosts were and the amount of unnecessary emotional distress they subjected us to, and our stay here has tarnished our experience of an otherwise beautiful country, known for its hospitality.

Needs work in customer service! We pulled up the incredibly steep drive to the parking area and could see the rooms but I did not immediately see any reception area. I could see through one of the rooms someone who I assumed was the owner hanging washing out the back so I called out hello to be promptly barked at in a very harsh tone to go to the reception - which had I seen it initially I would have done! I was then given what I can only describe as a lecture on how to fill out the breakfast form along with the warning that if it wasnt filled out properly we wouldnt get breakfast! I was then shown our room - which was tiny - I was prepared for small but it was only just big enough that we could walk around the bed and trying to accommodate our luggage as well was difficult. Then my husband was ushered back outside to park the car properly! Admittedly parking is tight and the husband John took over at this point and made light of the situation but sadly by this point I felt that we were an annoyance that was being barely tolerated rather than valued guests! The room was nicely decorated but incredibly noisy - we could not only hear everything through the walls as we tried to get to sleep but also the clumping around of the owners who live upstairs! Breakfast was delicious and John was very entertaining and affable but we were completely blanked by his wife though she did very pointedly ask other guests how their days had been the previous day! One star is all I can justify giving for the appalling customer service and the noisy tiny room.

Delightful stayThis boutique accommodation has character that makes you smile. It might not suit everyones style but its quirky nature makes it a fun stay. The accommodation is spotlessly clean and the breakfast is excellent. The owners are super hospitable and friendly. If you want a private getaway or just a bed... we highly recommend. Even the walk to the village .. down and then ... up the steep drive is achievable.
