    Increíble. Perfecto.

    Relaxing and beautiful village getaway

This hotel was one we stayed at during a tour of Germany, France and Italy. The location is wonderful and situated in a peaceful South Tyrolean village. The breakfast buffet featured a large variety of food to select from. The dinners were multi-courses and tasty. Plus, the wait staff was exceptional. Additionally, the spa facilities and pools were clean and inviting.

Wonderful hotel and town from which to explore Dolomites

Spent four nights at Abinea--room most comfortable and well furnished. Loved the breakfasts and had a couple of excellent dinners. Staff was most welcoming and helpful. Very convenient to town and hiking trails and the roof top pool was a great way to end a day of exploration. Underground parking was a plus.

    GOING DOWN HILL FAST

In short: feel exploited. POSITIVES: Good food, kind bar and restaurant staff. NEGATIVES: far from slopes, tiny, ugly, ill-equipped room and bathroom, incompetent reception staff and neglectful service. For longer version read below. This hotel was recommended by friends who went some time ago - from speaking to others, this hotel was indeed once run in a superior manner. Alarm bells rang before our arrival - we called ahead for advice on ski schools (which? Must we pre-book due to peak season? Etc) but the receptionist was utterly incapable of telling us anything useful or answering basic questions. Instead she did attempt to repeatedly sell us walking tours and advanced ski guides for adults despite us explaining several times that we were with children who were intermediate/ beginner level skiers. With no advice from them hotel we simply rang a ski school and then booked directly with them on our way to the Abinea. We eventually arrived at the hotel at 6:30pm and asked immediately where to hire skis. Rhe ski school selections were taking place at 10am and we wanted to avoid the morning crush. We were told that the hotel had a deal with Fill a ski hire and goods store, so we would receive 20% off as clients of the hotel, however we never managed to action this; we asked what time they closed but the receptionist made a sad face and said we would not be able to hire from them, as Fill was based in town and we would not make it before they closed. Since they only opened at 8:30 am we would not make our ski school appointment on time if we waited for them to open in the morning too. In view of this she recommended we hire our skis at the bottom of the main lifts instead, assuring us that there were lots of other stores you can hire from. At this point the receptionist handed over bus passes and at we blanched with shock. The website clearly states that the hotel is directly at the Alpe di Siusi so we were baffled as to why we would need bus passes. It transpires that the Abinea website is actually misleading. It is utterly inaccurate (See attached screenshot of the website). I would argue this is MIS-SELLING, and ethically questionable. We were then explained that we needed to build in a minimum of an hour every morning to get to the slopes! ONE HOUR FROM THE SLOPES! and in the event of bus timetables not matching your schedule, youd have to wait for the bus, extending your commute-time even further. The thought of piling three children into buses morning and evening, with all their ski gear, exhausted, sweaty and sore was not appealing. I should mention that Fill offer a service that allows you to leave boots, poles etc at the top of the mountain, for free, but that the reception naturally forgot to mention this. Hiring skis elsewhere requires prebooking ski rooms on the slopes during New Year week due to high demand. In short: we were ill advised and ended up carrying our equipment back and forth every day with our car. It would be useful for the hotel to provide this info to its clients. The receptionist was ill informed and ignorant. After muddling through with our ski hire, we subsequently returned to tell the receptionist that in fact we had wasted money by hiring from another company, when in fact Fill had two other stores (at the foot of the lifts and also at the top of the slopes) but which were not immediately visible from the lifts - and asked why she had not told us of the other two options...she simply shrugged and said oh, I didnt know: No apology, and even a bit of attitude. SO-CALLED FAMILY ROOM With gloom about the daily commute to the lifts hanging over us, we traipsed to the basement with the reception lady. This was where our bunker was situated, next to the spa, pool and near the boot room. It smelled strongly of chlorine, maybe due to the proximity of the pool or perhaps the big bleach burn in the carpet a few feet from our door. Lets begin by saying that you could get equivalent amenities and space in a double room in any standard roadside motel. That this was touted as a Family Room in a 4 star hotel, is unbelievable. There was a single bed on either side of the double bed and a sofa bed against the opposite wall with a strip of floor less than a metre wide and two long as free floor-space. The garden was an ugly square overlooking a supermarket car park full of delivery lorries and neon lights. Thankfully we could open our sliding door to it as the room itself was stiflingly hot and obviously cramped for all five of us. In terms of layout and storage this was poorly thought out. Clearly we were shoe-horned in to maximise the hotels earning in high season, but room 101 is clearly a substandard double room, relabelled by the exploitative management as a Family room. I could deal with a snug room if the storage were more carefully thought out but the reality was that it was clearly an opportunistic exploitation of a double room with jo thought or care given to remedy the setup. It was impossible to arrange even half of our belongings in a decent way. Our four pieces of luggage had to be double stacked, shoved under beds and other items left in our car. Even simple things that could have improved things were non-existent: there were no hooks on the back of the door, no drawers, just some cubby holes and one small wardrobe with anti-theft hangers. Anti theft-hangers! This is not what I expect of a 4-star hotel. One luggage rack for 5 people, with ski gear! The bedside tables were moved elsewhere in the room to accommodate the sardine-tin bed-arrangement leaving nowhere to stand, and only a handspan between the double bed and one of the single beds. All in all a humiliatingly basic arrangement for the money charged. I am surprised this establishment markets itself as Romantic Spa-hotel Abinea, as if my husband took me to stay in a room as miserable as this for a couples getaway, romance would be the last thing on my mind, even after seeing the soft-porn photography of couples decorating the website. Anyway, back to the room: The decor was more youth-hostel with chintz than Romantic Spa Hotel. White walls, some bad murals, ugly red and yellow curtains, bright me pleather eighties buttoned headboard, orange lighting and brown throw cushions. The lighting presented another problem: All five of us had to turn the light out when our 6 year old needed to sleep, as there were no reading lights of any sort, meaning we had to choose between harsh lighting of the whole room or complete darkness. We each had a single pillow - but since there were no reading lights, I supposed there was no need for reading pillows. The few pillows we had were all lumpy. BATHROOM The hair-dryer is a great metaphor for the hotels approach: false economy in getting the cheapest version of the amenity, rather than thinking about the guests experience. Does the hotel provide hair dryers? Sure! - a bad one that is unpleasant to use, just like our room. The cost of this stinginess in terms of lost customer goodwill exceeds by far the economic saving they made opting for the cheap version. My son called the hairdryer a Barbie hairdryer, meaning it was small, weak, asthmatic, permanently attached to the wall on a short curly cable, super low wattage, incapable of providing a blow-dry, yet very capable of chewing your hair and singeing it. The shelf upon which the sink rested was not level, causing bottles to roll off and smash. Since it was only a basic double room, one sink for 5 people was a real annoyance all week. There was also no bathtub but there was a nice, large walk-in shower (the latter being the only redeeming feature of the whole room/bathroom). We have all returned home with bruised knees because the bathroom door opened directly against the toilet seat and so upon entering the bathroom, the person on the toilet would have their knees smashed. Anyone at the sink would also have to move over to avoid the door opening and closing. You can imagine how that facilitated the morning chaos of 5 family members filing in and out of the bathroom. To add insult to injury, there were only two proper towel hooks in the whole bathroom. Where to hang 5 damp towels every day? Where do they dry? Where to hang damp ski gloves and jackets? The whole room was like a horrible laundry, every door and ledge full of items. Very stressful, not at all restful. On the back of the cramped bathroom door, were a couple of robe hooks meaning the person sitting on the toilet not only had smashed knees, but was also subjected to suffocation from their face being buried in the robes hanging on the back of the door. When more than one item was hung on the back of the door, they inevitable fell down into the toilet. What fun! When I asked about putting hooks on the back of the room entry door, I was told but that would be uncomfortable as it would make the hooks open into the wardrobe door. Our discomfort was clearly not something they ever considered. Clearly no one had used the room and bathroom to see what a nightmare It was in terms of finish, layout and attention to detail. We frequently were only given 3 or 4 towels for all five of us, and when I requested more from reception, they forgot entirely to provide them. We could not have been more neglected by the front of house. The outside pool was beautiful to look at, but full of canoodling couples and what completed the feeing of lack of hygiene was the soaking floor around the indoor steps to the outside pool, the piles of damp towels left all over the sofas and couches, the wet spa slippers lying around. The mess and cramped indoor seating meant that there was insufficient space to lounge around the upstairs pool. The basement pool was much more user friendly, albeit with no views. The only redeeming qualities of the whole experience, were the lovely restaurant and bar staff, the charming chef, and the overall quality of the food. Thankfully we spent most of our days outside skiing and skating and used our own car to to get about and to and from the ski lifts. We thoroughly enjoyed the skiing, once we made it up to the top, and we tried to ignore the room, the stress it caused, the unprofessional reception staff, but in the end, we could not get out of there fast enough. The manager knew we were unhappy but was either too cowardly or too lazy to face us and ask what he could do to help. He did offer two free hours in the spa, which I did not feel like taking up as I had no desire to be lying around thinking of the prospect of returning to my cheap, ugly motel room. No other gesture was made by way of compensation. I doubt the hotel will make it to the next decade if our experience is anything to go by.

    Anything anyone could wish for

My husband and I stayed at the ABINEA for 9 days. During our stay we were treated amazingly. The staff is super friendly, helpful and always eager to fulfill every wish. May it be still finding a spa appointment on a fully booked day, to catering to dietary restrictions, to suggesting and booking day activities. We felt very welcomed and at home. We booked the 3/4 board option. I am vegetarian and they always had veggie options available on the menu. The food was regional, versatile and simply amazing. Even if you only opt for the breakfast option the variety is enormous. They even have a juice maker so you can have your favorite juice in the morning. Our room was immaculate and very nice. Since I am a passionate swimmer my highlight was the 20m sky pool on the roof. The panoramic sauna is also amazing with a great view of the mountain. They also have another indoor pool as well as multiple saunas, a steam bath, a salt bath, hay beds and my absolute favorite: floating beds. Best nap ever. since we stayed towards the end of august we were hit with some rain, however the multiple spa options saved the day. We really loved our stay and would recommend it to anyone who wants to spend some time in the Dolomites. We would definitely choose Abinea again. Thanks again to the staff and we wish you all the best. Corona note: the hotel made a great effort to comply with the rules and regulations and we felt safe at all times.
