A cinematographic sceneryThis abbey is the kind of place you have a feeling youve seen in a movie before. We drove all the way from Rome and it was worth it. The Suite dellAbate is beautifully decorated with characteristic furniture and objects of art. The mountain view is beautiful. The historic building is well maintained and in very good condition. Theres a terrace right at the entrance with is a perfect setting for a drink or reading a book while relaxing and enjoying the Mountain View. A parking lot is available. The only problem was the WiFi signal in the room, which was scarce. Breakfast was good, but we did not try the next door restaurant. I recommend a visit to the abbey chapel and its impressive frescos.

Well worth the visit to this off-the-beaten track abbey! You will suddenly come across the abrupt turn-off to this little Benedictine Abbey when you are travelling on the S209 north of the village of Ferentillo. Even though it will appear that you have come to the wrong place, keep driving through the first little collection of houses until you reach the Abbey. It is a beautiful little church, which contains a number of outstanding frescoes, one of which dates back to the 5th century AD, depicting the Lombard Duke of Spoleto meeting the Syrian hermit Lazarus. The artistic value of these frescoes lies in the fact that they abandoned for the first time the frontal image of the human figures. The church has one large aisle ending in three apses and contains five sarchophagi, which are all decorated on the outside. The Abbey is attached to the Residenza d'Epoca, which is separately owned and is run as a historical country residence. While we didn"t stay at the hotel, w e had a great coffee, while we walked around inside the converted monastery.

Beautiful historic hotel with fantastic restuarantWe visited the hotel in May and the weather was very changeable. Our rom was very comfortable and the setting of the former abbey and lovely. The church within the hotel has its origins around 300AD and is very interesting. The highlight of our stay was dining in the hotel restaurant where our host Carla took us through each menu option and wine recommendation. Carla was the perfect host and the food and wine selection was absolutely superb. We dined in the restaurant for three nights and each time the food was excellent. This restaurant and the hotel are hidden gems in the heart of Umbria.

Not really a hotelThe building and location are stunning for a short stay and the ancient church (fee payable for entry) is well worth a visit. However this is essentially a wedding venue which also takes paying guests during the week. We stayed Mon-Fri in early September, usually a peak time for tourists in Umbria, and were virtually the only people there. There is a very good buffet breakfast but after that the place is deserted all day apart from a receptionist. A car is essential as there is only one possible walk from the abbey without going down the steep access track to the Valnerina road which isn't suitable for walking, and it's some distance to the hearest village.Dinner is offered in an adjacent building by an external caterer (so meals are paid separately from the hotel). The manager is charming but the menu is limited and is the same every night. If peace and quiet are your thing (and you don't want to eat during the day - the minibar contains only a small bottle of water) then this is perfect, but be warned - at the end of the week (Thurs and Fri in our case) the place is full of contractors setting up tents, tables, cooking facilities etc etc for the weddings which take place most weekends. The noise for this starts at 7am and finishes about 8pm. As a wedding location, this must be perfect.

Beautiful placeI stayed at the Abbazia in Ferragosto with my husband and my one year old son. We had a beautiful time there! Despite the heat in Italy, in the Abbazia it was cool. The garden is astonishing and the whole team very friendly! Strongly recommend!
